Chapter 9 - The DNA Envelope on the Mahogany Desk That Turned Luca’s World to Ash

================================================================================
Dawn returned to the Moretti mansion, but it brought no warmth.
The estate was under complete military lockdown. Over fifty heavily armed Moretti enforcers in tactical gear patrolled the perimeter, accompanied by Belgian Malinois attack dogs that snarled into the misty woods bordering Lake Shore Drive. The estate’s private medical staff had treated my cuts and bruised wrists, while Dr. Vance remained upstairs in the nursery, sitting by Lily’s bed as the exhausted little girl finally fell into a deep, uninterrupted sleep.
In the fourth-floor private study, the fire burned low, casting long, solemn shadows across the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Luca stood by the panoramic window, his silhouette dark against the gray light of sunrise. He had changed into a clean black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the neck, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his scarred forearms. On the heavy mahogany desk behind him lay the bloodstained manila envelope that had been recovered from the mercenary’s body in the wine cellar.
The wax seal on the envelope bore an insignia I had never seen before: two crossed silver daggers encircled by an ouroboros—the ancient emblem of the Sovereign Syndicate Council of Milan.
I sat in the leather armchair opposite the desk, my hands wrapped around a mug of hot black coffee, watching Luca’s rigid back.
“Who were those men, Luca?” I asked quietly, my voice breaking the heavy silence of the study. “They weren't Bellini soldiers. They spoke Russian and French. They fought like military commandos.”
Luca slowly turned around. His face looked as though it had been carved from cold granite, but beneath the stone exterior, his dark gray eyes were burning with an agonizing, unfathomable pain.
“They were a black-ops extraction unit known as the Shadow Guard,” Luca replied, his voice dropping to a low, chilling whisper. “They don't work for street families. They don't take contracts from Antonio Bellini or my uncle Salvatore. They take orders from only one entity: the Executive Sovereign Directorate in Milan.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Milan? But why would an international mafia directorate send hitmen to abduct an American maid and her daughter?”
Luca walked over to the desk. He picked up the bloodstained envelope, broke the silver wax seal with a pocket knife, and pulled out the contents.
Inside were three documents: a set of high-resolution surveillance photographs, a certified medical laboratory report from the Swiss Institute of Forensic Genetics in Geneva, and an ancient handwritten letter written in faded black ink on Italian parchment.
Luca laid the genetic report flat against the leather blotter and pushed it toward me.
“Read the names, Hannah,” he said, his voice trembling by an imperceptible fraction.
I picked up the document, my eyes scanning the technical medical jargon, the chromosome markers, and the probability calculations at the bottom of the page.
*Subject A: Luca Andrea Moretti.*
*Subject B: Lily Brooks Whitmore.*
*Relationship Probability: 99.98% — Direct Paternal Lineage Confirmed.*
The room spun violently. The blood drained from my face so fast my vision went completely black around the edges.
I dropped the paper onto the desk as if it had burst into flames.
“This... this is impossible,” I choked out, my voice rising in hysterical disbelief. “This is a lie! Another forgery concocted by Vanessa or your enemies!”
Luca didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He merely looked down at me with an expression of profound, soul-crushing sorrow.
“It is not a forgery, Hannah,” Luca said softly. “The Swiss Institute is an independent scientific body protected under diplomatic neutrality. Their seals cannot be bought. That test was commissioned seven days ago by the Sovereign Directorate.”
“How?!” I cried, rising from the armchair, my hands shaking violently. “I never met you before eleven months ago when I came to this house! Three years ago, I was trapped in a suburban prison with Charles Whitmore! How could you be Lily’s father?!”
Luca closed his eyes for a long, painful second. When he opened them, the darkness inside them was deeper than any ocean.
“Eight years ago,” Luca began, his voice rough and gravelly with heavy remorse, “before I took the oath as Don of Chicago, I was sent to the Black Forest region in Germany to recover from three gunshot wounds following the Milanese succession war. My identity was completely scrubbed. I was registered at a private medical clinic under the alias 'Lucas Meyer.'”
My breath hitched in my throat. My knees nearly buckled.
*Lucas Meyer.*
The name echoed through the deepest, most buried chambers of my memory like a phantom scream.
Eight years ago.
I was barely nineteen years old, working as an exchange volunteer for an international humanitarian program in Bavaria. One rainy night in October, a man had stumbled into the small clinic where I was assisting the night doctor. He was bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds, half-dead, burning with fever. For two weeks, while the local authorities were kept away by private guards, I sat by that man’s bedside. I changed his bandages, bathed his burning forehead, and listened to him whisper about his late sister Elena in his delirium.
When his fever broke, there was a single, passionate, unforgettable night between two lonely souls who believed they would never see the sunrise.
And then, before dawn, a convoy of black armored sedans had arrived. The man was gone. He left no note, no address, nothing—only a small silver medallion carved with a golden sparrow, which was stolen from my purse three weeks later when I returned to America.
Two months later, back in Chicago, broke, pregnant, and terrified, I met Charles Whitmore at a charity gala where I was working as a coat-check girl. Charles was charming, wealthy, and when I discovered I was pregnant, he convinced me that he loved me, promising to raise the unborn child as his own legitimate heir to secure his family’s approval.
I had spent seven years believing that Charles was Lily’s biological father—that the child had been conceived during the brief, failed courtship before our rushed marriage.
“It was you...” I whispered, tears flooding my eyes, blurring the face of the man standing before me. “The clinic in Baden-Baden... Lucas.”
Luca nodded slowly, his broad chest rising and falling with heavy, agonizing breaths.
“When my men pulled me out of Germany, my father wiped all records of that clinic to keep the Sicilian factions from hunting down anyone who had aided me,” Luca said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I searched for you for two years, Hannah. But my father had fed me false intelligence, telling me that the volunteer girl had died in an auto accident in Munich.”
He reached out, his large, scarred hand gently picking up the ancient handwritten letter from the desk.
“This letter was written by my late father on his deathbed,” Luca revealed, his eyes burning with cold rage. “He knew you were pregnant. He knew Lily was my blood daughter. But my father was obsessed with syndicate purity. He believed that having a child with an American outsider would destroy the Moretti dynasty’s claim to the Italian throne. So he paid Charles Whitmore’s father—an old corporate associate—ten million dollars to take you as a wife, claim the child as his own, and keep you buried in suburban obscurity forever.”
The monstrous, unfathomable scope of the conspiracy crashed down upon me with the force of an avalanche.
My entire life—my marriage to Charles, the abuse, the isolation, the court hearings, the kidnapping, Vanessa’s arrival, the five-hundred-thousand-dollar contract—every single drop of blood and tear I had shed for seven years had been orchestrated by powerful men moving chess pieces to keep a mafia bloodline clean.
“And Charles knew?” I choked out, nausea rising violently in my throat. “Charles knew the entire time that Lily wasn't his?!”
“Charles was paid an annual stipend of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars by my father’s private trust to play the role of the doting father,” Luca confirmed with chilling disgust. “When my father died three years ago, the payments stopped. Charles ran out of money, ran up gambling debts, and that's when Vanessa Bellini approached him. Vanessa discovered the truth through her family's connections to the Milan council. She bought Lily from Charles to bring her back to me as a ‘miracle heir,’ intending to poison my mind into believing that you were a deadbeat runaway.”
I buried my face in my hands, weeping uncontrollably.
The horror of it was suffocating. Lily wasn't just an innocent victim caught in a custody dispute. She was the rightful, sole heiress to the largest mafia empire in North America—and because of that bloodline, an entire army of international killers was now hunting her down to prevent Luca from claiming his throne.
Footsteps moved softly across the Persian rug.
Warm, powerful hands gently pulled my fingers away from my face.
Luca was kneeling before my chair once again. But this time, he wasn't looking at me as a mafia don or an employer. He was looking at me as the man from that rainy clinic in the Black Forest—the father of my child, whose life had been violently derailed by the sins of his ancestors.
“Hannah,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with an exquisite, heartbreaking tenderness. “For seven years, you bore the cross that belonged to me. You suffered the cruelty of monsters because of my blood. I cannot undo the past. I cannot wipe away the three years you spent weeping in the dark.”
He reached out and gently brushed a tear from my cheek with his thumb.
“But I swear to you on the breath in my lungs, on the soul of my sister, and on the blood that runs through Lily’s veins: every man who had a hand in tearing you two apart will burn. The Sovereign Council in Milan will bend their knees to you, or I will reduce their empire to ash.”
Before I could speak, the study doors burst open.
Matteo stood in the archway, his face pale, holding a high-frequency military radio receiver.
“Boss,” Matteo said, his voice tight with emergency protocols. “The perimeter sensors at the South Lake gate just tripped. Charles Whitmore didn't flee to Kansas City.”
Luca rose to his feet, his features hardening into lethal stone in an instant. “Where is he?”

“He’s at the private airfield in Gary, Indiana,” Matteo reported. “And he’s not alone. He has six armored vehicles from the Detroit Syndicate... and they’re moving toward the estate with heavy anti-materiel weapons. Charles just broadcasted a message on the council frequency: he’s coming to burn this mansion to the ground and take his 'daughter' back by force.”
