Chapter 6 - THE SIEGE OF THE MORETTI ESTATE

Chaos erupted downstairs.
Gunshots echoed through the grand foyer.
Glass shattered in waves as bullets pierced the expensive stained-glass windows.
“Stay in this room,” Luca ordered, pulling a heavy Glock from his waistband.
“Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone except my voice.”
“Luca, wait!” I grabbed his sleeve.
“It's too dangerous out there.”
“That's why I have to go,” he said, his eyes burning with mafia steel.
“They want to destroy everything I love. I won't let them.”
He kissed the top of Oliver’s head quickly.
Then he disappeared into the hallway, slamming the heavy oak door.
The click of the lock sounded terrifyingly final.
“Emily, are we going to die?” Oliver asked, trembling.
“Never,” I said, pulling him into a tight hug.
“Your father won't let anything happen to us.”
Outside, the gunfire grew louder.
Heavy boots pounded up the stairs.
Someone was trying doors down the hall, kicking them open one by one.
*Bang! Bang!*
The sound of splintering wood echoed closer to our room.
They were only three doors away.
I looked around the master bedroom in a panic.
There had to be another way out.
“Oliver, help me push this heavy dresser,” I whispered urgently.
Together, we shoved the oak dresser against the bedroom door just as a heavy blow struck the wood from the outside.
“Open up!” a gruff voice yelled in the hallway.
“I know the brat is in there!”
The door splintered.
A large hand reached through the broken panel, groping for the lock.
I grabbed the heavy brass lamp again.
As soon as the hand turned the lock, I swung the lamp with all my might.
A sharp cry of pain echoed from the hallway.
The hand withdrew, dripping with blood.
“Bitch!” the intruder roared, kicking the door with brute force.

The dresser slid across the floor, and the door burst open.
Cliffhanger: A masked gunman stepped through the wreckage, leveling a silenced pistol directly at Oliver's chest, while whispering that Vanessa sent him to finish the job.
