Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Chose Herself

I didn't scream. Screaming would have made Tyler run toward the car, and I needed him standing still long enough to think.

"Look at me," I said. "Do not get in."

Tyler shook his head. "He'll kill Dad."

"He already owns Dad's fear. Don't give him yours."

I lifted my phone and photographed the sedan's license plate. Marco stepped out of the coffee shop across the street. He wasn't carrying a visible weapon. He simply raised his own phone and began recording.

Adrian's smile vanished. The sedan accelerated away.

Tyler sagged against the laundromat door. I wanted to shake him. Instead, I told Marco to take him to Naomi's clinic, where he could give a recorded statement in a safe setting. I refused to promise that honesty would erase his crimes.

Back at the estate, Vincent met me in the conservatory. I told him everything: the staged sale, my father's betrayal, Adrian's threats. He listened by reading each message carefully, never interrupting.

Then he wrote: I SHOULD HAVE INVESTIGATED YOUR FATHER BEFORE I AGREED TO HELP. I THOUGHT PAYING HIS DEBT WOULD FREE YOU. I WAS WRONG.

"You made a decision about my life without asking me," I replied.

He nodded. YES.

"I won't be somebody's rescue project."

YOU ARE NOT.

"And if we survive this, I want the marriage annulled or legally reviewed. I want to decide whether we stay together because we choose each other, not because money changed hands."

Vincent stared at the screen. Then he typed: I WILL PAY FOR YOUR OWN LAWYER. NOT MINE.

That evening, he arranged for an independent attorney, Elena Park, to meet me privately. Elena explained that the purported transaction gave no one ownership of me. She discussed my legal options, including challenging the marriage if consent had been coerced, securing independent finances, and reporting threats. She did not tell me what choice to make.

I signed nothing that night. For the first time, I felt powerful simply because I was allowed to wait.

Meanwhile, Naomi called with the preliminary lab report. The object contained a miniature electronic assembly and a small power source. The laboratory could not yet determine its full function, but the components were inconsistent with any standard hearing treatment the specialist recognized. Further examination would be necessary.

I translated for Vincent. His expression grew distant.

"What is it?" I asked.

He wrote: SIX YEARS AGO, AFTER THE EXPLOSION, ADRIAN INSISTED I LET KESSLER TREAT ME AT HOME. I REMEMBER WAKING UP WITH A BANDAGE AND BEING TOLD I HAD HIT MY HEAD.

A second message arrived from Naomi. The forensic technician had found a manufacturer's marking inside the casing. It belonged to a private security contractor that had dissolved four years earlier.

Its registered director was Adrian Bell.
