Chapter 10 - The Secret Clinic and the Doctor's Confession

============================================================
The Lake Geneva estate was an opulent, sprawling fortress constructed of limestone and dark timber, perched precariously atop a rocky bluff overlooking the freezing, black waters of the lake.
High-intensity halogen spotlights swept the perimeter fences, illuminating concertina wire, private patrol dogs, and at least twenty heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical vests and night-vision goggles.
The heavy wrought-iron gates swung open with a screech of electric motors as Luca drove the armored Maserati Levante up the serpentine driveway.
Beside him, I sat in the passenger seat, my coat buttoned to the chin, my fingers resting on the hidden detonator Luca had slipped into my palm ten minutes earlier. In the rear seat, bound and gagged with heavy tape to maintain the illusion of compliance, sat Dr. Samuel Bennett, his eyes wide with terrified resignation.
The SUV ground to a halt on the expansive gravel courtyard before the towering front entrance of the mansion.
Instantly, a dozen mercenaries surrounded the vehicle, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting crimson dots across our windshield.
“Hands where we can see them! Driver, step out slowly!” an enforcer barked through a megaphone.
Luca turned to me. His face was entirely devoid of fear, his jawline locked in pure granite. He reached across the console, his hand cupping the back of my neck, pulling me forward until his lips pressed firmly, fiercely against mine.
The kiss was sudden, intense, and tasted of rain, danger, and an unspoken vow that made every nerve ending in my body hum with electric fire.
“When the lights go red, Hannah,” Luca whispered against my mouth, his dark eyes burning into mine, “you hit that switch and you get behind the granite fountain. Do not look back for me. Just get your mother.”
“Luca...”
“Trust me,” he said softly.
He kicked his door open and stepped out into the glare of the spotlights, raising his hands to shoulder height with cold, aristocratic elegance. I opened my door and stepped out into the freezing wind, keeping my hands visible while keeping my thumb locked over the detonator button in my pocket.
The double front doors of the mansion swung wide.
Michael Moretti stepped out onto the grand limestone terrace, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat that looked ridiculous over his rumpled tuxedo trousers. Beside him, dragged by two hulking guards, was my mother.
“Mom!” I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat.
Evelyn Collins looked frail, her hospital gown fluttering in the biting lake wind, an oxygen tube still taped to her nose, her gray hair tangled. But when she saw me, her faded blue eyes widened with fierce, motherly protectiveness.
“Hannah! Baby, run! Don't worry about me, just run!” she cried out, before a guard shoved a gloved hand over her mouth.
Luca’s eyes drifted from my mother to Michael, his expression tightening into something demonic.
“You brought the keys, brother?” Michael shouted down from the terrace, a manic, triumphant grin spreading across his face. “Did you bring Pop’s ledger?”
Luca reached into his breast pocket with agonizing slowness, pulling out the black leather journal, the miniature silver key, and the heavy gold lion chain. He held them high in the spotlight beams for everyone to see.
“Everything you asked for, Michael,” Luca said, his voice carrying clearly over the howling lake wind. “The evidence that puts you in the electric chair, and the keys to forty million dollars in Swiss bullion. Release the woman, and it’s all yours.”
Michael laughed—a shrill, manic cackle that echoed off the limestone facade.
“You really are an idiot, Luca!” Michael gloated, leaning over the stone balustrade. “You think I’m going to let you walk away from here? Alberto Bellini’s private helicopter is landing on the south lawn in five minutes! We take the keys, we take the ledger, we execute you and your little maid right here on the gravel, and tomorrow morning I take my seat as Don Moretti with the commission’s blessing!”
Michael raised his hand, signaling the dozen mercenaries surrounding our car to raise their weapons for the execution.
“Goodbye, big brother,” Michael sneered.
Luca didn’t flinch. He didn’t drop his hands.
Instead, Luca raised his left wrist, tapping the face of his tactical smartwatch twice.
“Michael,” Luca said calmly. “Did you really think Pop built this safehouse without installing an emergency purge protocol?”
Michael’s grin froze. “What did you say?”
“The natural gas heating system beneath this terrace,” Luca explained, his voice chillingly conversational. “Pop had the main intake lines routed through a secondary regulator beneath the central limestone staircase. When the system detects a total perimeter lockdown... it takes exactly four seconds to flood the basement vents with twenty thousand cubic feet of pressurized methane.”
Michael’s eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated terror. “Shoot him! Shoot him now!”
“Hannah, NOW!” Luca roared.
I slammed my thumb down onto the detonator button in my pocket.
*BOOM!*
The secondary breaker panel on the north side of the estate exploded in a blinding shower of sparks and flame. Every single halogen spotlight, every exterior security light, and every interior chandelier instantly died, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
Simultaneously, Luca pulled two smoke grenades from his tactical belt, pulled the pins with his teeth, and slammed them onto the gravel. Thick, impenetrable white phosphorous smoke erupted across the courtyard, blinding the mercenaries.
Gunfire erupted in every direction—wild, panicked, blind bursts of automatic fire tearing through the fog.
I lunged forward, staying low to the ground, sprinting toward the terrace stairs as Luca had commanded.
Through the strobe-like muzzle flashes of the mercenaries' weapons, I saw Luca move like a mythological god of war. He drew his twin semi-automatic pistols, firing with lethal, terrifying speed. Every report of his weapon was followed by the wet thud of an enemy collapsing into the gravel. He didn't take cover; he advanced through the crossfire like an unstoppable force of nature, cutting down Michael’s mercenaries with absolute, terrifying precision.
I reached the bottom of the terrace stairs just as the two guards holding my mother scrambled to draw their sidearms.
Without thinking, driven entirely by primal, protective fury, I leveled the heavy revolver I had kept in my wool coat and fired twice.
*BANG! BANG!*
The first guard collapsed against the balustrade, clutching his thigh. The second guard turned toward me, but before he could raise his weapon, a massive hand grabbed him by the collar from behind.
Luca slammed the guard’s skull against the limestone pillar with bone-shattering force, dropping him instantly to the stone floor.
“Hannah! Take your mother!” Luca barked, grabbing a fallen assault rifle from the floor and pivoting toward the grand entrance hall.
I threw my arms around my mother, pulling her down behind the heavy stone balustrade. “Mom! I’ve got you! I’ve got you, you're safe!”
Evelyn Collins was weeping, clutching my face with cold, trembling hands. “Hannah... oh baby, who is that man?”
“That’s Luca,” I whispered, tears of relief burning my eyes. “He’s going to keep us safe.”
Inside the grand foyer of the mansion, the sound of screaming and shattering glass echoed.
Michael was running frantically through the dark, marble-floored hall, heading toward the rear French doors leading to the helicopter landing pad on the lawn.
Luca kicked the double doors open, stepping onto the pristine white marble floor.
“Michael!” Luca roared, his voice shaking the crystal wall sconces.
Michael spun around near the grand spiral staircase, his face drenched in sweat, holding a silver revolver with both hands, his aim wild and erratic.
“Stay back, Luca! Stay back! I’ll shoot! I swear to God, I’ll kill you!”
Luca didn’t stop. He walked across the bloody marble, discarding his empty assault rifle, his hands empty, his dark eyes burning with absolute, sovereign wrath.
“Shoot me, Michael,” Luca challenged, taking step after step. “You shot our father from the shadows with a syringe. You hid behind Vanessa. You hid behind Alberto Bellini. Now look me in the eyes and pull the trigger like a man.”
Michael screamed in hysterical fury and squeezed the trigger.
*CLICK.*
The hammer fell on an empty chamber.
Michael had forgotten to reload after firing at the patio.
The color drained completely from Michael’s face. The revolver slipped from his numb fingers, clattering uselessly against the marble.
In two strides, Luca crossed the remaining distance. His left hand shot out, wrapping like an iron vise around Michael’s throat, lifting the younger man completely off his feet and slamming him against the towering portrait of Carmine Moretti that hung over the fireplace.
Michael choked, his feet dangling six inches above the floor, his hands frantically clawing at Luca’s impenetrable grip.
“You disgraced our father’s name,” Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with the cold finality of an executioner. “You terrified our mother. You threatened the woman I love. And now... your time on this earth has expired.”
Luca pulled his tactical combat knife from his boot, the serrated steel gleaming in the moonlight filtering through the shattered skylight.
“Luca... please...” Michael wheezed, his eyes bulging as consciousness began to slip away. “Brother...”
“I have no brother,” Luca said.
Before the blade could strike, the roar of helicopter blades shook the entire mansion, rattling the roof timbers.
The rear French doors were kicked open, and six elite operatives dressed in grey tactical uniforms—the personal strike team of Salvatore Rossi and the Chicago Commission—flooded the grand foyer, their weapons trained on Michael.
Behind them, walking with slow, deliberate authority, was Uncle Antonio.
“Hold, Luca!” Antonio commanded, stepping into the hall. “The commission has arrived! Don Salvatore is on that aircraft!”
Luca slowly lowered his blade. He released his grip, allowing Michael to crash to the marble floor in a coughing, gasping heap.
Luca turned to Uncle Antonio, his chest heaving, his dark suit splattered with cordite and blood. “Is the evidence secured?”
Antonio held up the sealed black leather bag containing Carmine’s ledger, the blood vials retrieved from the bank, and the audio recordings.
“The Continental vault was opened thirty minutes ago by the commission’s federal liaisons,” Antonio announced, his voice ringing through the ruined estate. “The tox screens are certified. The RICO warrants against Alberto Bellini and Councilman Russo have been executed. The war is over, Luca.”
Luca stood completely still for a moment, letting the realization wash over him.
The four-year nightmare of his father’s murder had finally come to an end. The traitors were broken, the empire was secured, and the Moretti name stood untarnished at the summit of the underworld.
Luca turned his head toward the terrace doorway, where I stood supporting my mother with one arm, my other hand clutching the heavy revolver.
Luca walked across the marble floor, stepping past the kneeling commission enforcers, stepping past his ruined, weeping brother. He stopped directly before me.
Without a word, he reached out and took my mother’s frail hand, kissing her knuckles with profound, gentle respect.
“Mrs. Collins,” Luca said, his deep voice thick with emotion. “I am Luca Moretti. I apologize for the terror you have endured tonight. My private medical transport is waiting at the south gate to take you to the finest private suite at Northwestern Memorial. You will never spend another day in pain, and you will never worry about a medical bill again.”
My mother looked at Luca, then looked at me, a soft, understanding smile touching her pale lips. “You take care of my girl, young man. She has a heart too big for this world.”
“With my life, Mrs. Collins,” Luca swore. “With my life.”
He turned to me, his dark eyes searching mine with a raw, undeniable passion that stole my breath away.
“Hannah,” he whispered, his large hands gently cupping my cheeks, heedless of the blood and dirt on his cuffs. “Come home with me. Be my queen.”
I smiled through my tears, resting my hands over his heart, feeling its steady, powerful beat against my palms.
May you like
“Take me home, Luca.”
