Chapter 15 - THE FINAL FALL AND THE HAPPY ENDING

The gunshot cracked like thunder across the dark water.

Marco grunted sharply, stumbling backward as the bullet grazed his shoulder.

“Marco!” I screamed, catching him before he fell.

Salvatore turned his weapon on Isabella in a fit of rage, firing twice and dropping her accomplice.

Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance.

A dozen federal SUV lights flooded the pier from every direction.

Agent Vance's voice boomed through a megaphone.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapons! You're surrounded!”

Salvatore dropped his gun, raising his hands in defeat as agents swarmed the platform.

Isabella backed away frantically toward the edge of the pier, clutching the fraudulent deed.

“Stay back!” she shrieked, tears streaming down her face.

“It's mine! All of it is mine!”

I gently lowered Marco to the ground, handing my Glock to an approaching agent.

Then I walked slowly toward Isabella.

She stood right on the wet wooden edge of the pier, the dark, freezing waters of Lake Michigan churning violently below.

“It's over, Isabella,” I said quietly.

“You lost.”

“I won't let you win!” she screamed, lunging forward with a hidden switchblade.

I didn't flinch.

I stepped swiftly to the side, grabbing her wrist with all my strength.

Using her own momentum, I twisted her arm behind her back.

Isabella lost her footing on the wet wood.

She slipped.

Her scream echoed over the water as she plunged straight down into the freezing lake.

She surfaced once, thrashing wildly, before federal divers tossed a life ring toward her.

I stood at the edge of the pier, watching as they hauled her dripping and shivering onto the concrete.

Agent Vance walked up beside me, handing me a clean handkerchief.

“Good catch, Mrs. Moretti.”

I wiped my hands and looked back toward the armored SUV.

Nonna Antonella was already untied, walking steadily toward me with the help of a federal medic.

She stopped in front of me, her dark eyes shining with unshed tears.

She reached out and took my hands in her warm, wrinkled palms.

“You saved my life, my girl,” she whispered.

“You saved this family.”

I smiled, feeling a profound weight lift from my shoulders for the first time in seven years.

“We saved each other, Nonna.”

Three months later, the Chicago courts finalized the dissolution of the Moretti syndicate.

Gabriel and his uncles were sentenced to multiple consecutive life terms without parole.

Isabella awaited trial behind federal bars.

And the Moretti estate?

The grand iron gates remained open.

The Sunday roast was served every single week.

Only this time, I sat at the head of the table.

No longer the quiet, hidden wife.

But the undisputed queen of my own destiny.
