Chapter 12 - A City on Fire and the Don Who Rebuilt the Ashes Just for Me

================================================================================

Dawn rose over the Hudson, casting a bruised purple and gold glow across the terrace.

By noon, the cleanup was complete. Vincent and his teams had scrubbed the marble clean, replaced the reinforced glass panels, and disposed of the eight mercenaries who had been foolish enough to trespass onto Rossi land.

Damen spent the morning on the phone with the heads of the remaining crime families in the Northeast. He didn't offer a parley. He didn't call for a sit-down in Little Italy.

He issued an ultimatum:

"Antonio Marcone is dead. Richard Hastings is in federal custody. The Hastings trust, the Manhattan docks, and the Queens freight terminals belong to Clara Rossi. Anyone who raises a hand against my wife will find their homes bulldozed and their accounts liquidated before sundown."

By two o'clock, the Five Families had sent three dozen white floral wreaths to the estate—a formal, public submission to the new Don and his Queen.

That evening, Damen led me out to the eastern cliffside overlooking the river.

The autumn wind was brisk, rustling through the scarlet leaves of the oak trees. Damen had draped his heavy cashmere overcoat across my shoulders, standing behind me with his arms wrapped around my waist, his chin resting gently on my shoulder.

"Look down there," he whispered, pointing toward the southern horizon where the glittering skyline of Manhattan poked through the twilight haze.

"I see a city that almost swallowed us both," I replied, leaning back against his chest, reveling in the solid, unyielding heat of him.

"I see an empire waiting for you," Damen murmured. "Tomorrow, the Board of Hastings Capital ratifies the merger with Rossi Global. But we aren't running it the way your father did. And we aren't running it like a criminal front."

I turned slightly in his embrace, looking up at his sharp, sculpted profile. "What are you talking about?"

Damen reached into his inner pocket and handed me a thin leather binder embossed with gold leaf.

"I signed over the waterfront trusts to an independent foundation under your name," Damen said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. "Fifty million dollars from the liquidated accounts will go directly toward shelters for abused women and domestic violence safehouses across the five boroughs. No mob money. Clean, untouchable endowment."

My breath hitched. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I opened the folder. The top document bore Damen's sweeping signature alongside my mother's maiden name: *The Elena Hastings Foundation for Hope.*

"Damen..." I choked out, a sob catching in my throat. "Why would you do this?"

Damen cupped my face with both hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the stray tears rolling down my cheeks.

"Because when I first saw those scars on your ribs, Clara, I swore to God I would burn the world that caused them," he whispered, his eyes dark with an emotion that bordered on worship. "I can't undo what your father did to you. I can't erase the years you spent in terror. But I can give you the power to make sure no other girl in this city has to trade her life to survive a monster."

In that moment, the last lingering shadow of the cold-blooded Don vanished. What stood before me was a man whose fierce, terrifying loyalty had rebuilt my shattered world from the ashes.

I rose on my tiptoes, wrapped my arms around his neck, and kissed him with all the passion, gratitude, and fierce love that had taken root in my heart. Damen groaned against my mouth, his hands tightening around my waist, lifting me off my feet as the twilight breeze swirled around us on the clifftop.
