Chapter 1 - The Forbidden Lullaby

"My three-year-old daughter broke the strictest rule in a mafia billionaire's mansion by sneaking into his forbidden bedroom and singing to him while he lay unconscious. His powerful family had warned me that entering that room would cost me my job, but when my little girl kissed his hand and whispered, ""Tomorrow, I'll sing better,"" something happened that forty-nine nights of medical treatment had failed to achieve. The next morning, his mother locked me inside her office and showed me the terrifying evidence.

""YOUR DAUGHTER WENT INTO LORENZO MORETTI'S ROOM!""

Isabella Moretti's voice was ice-cold.

My knees nearly buckled.

""My daughter? Mia?""

She placed a medical chart on her desk.

""Yes, Clara. And something happened while she was there.""

My name is Clara Hayes, and I was a single mother who had spent eighteen months fighting to keep a roof over our heads.

I'd cleaned apartments, waited tables, and folded laundry until sunrise.

Some nights, my little Mia slept inside a laundry cart because I couldn't afford a babysitter.

Then I found a housekeeping job at the Moretti estate.

The salary was more than I'd ever earned.

For the first time, I thought we might be safe.

But Isabella had given me one warning.

""NEVER enter the second-floor medical wing.""

That was where her son, Lorenzo Moretti, lay unconscious after a horrific car accident.

At thirty-eight, Lorenzo was one of New York's most feared mafia bosses.

His car had been struck at nearly seventy miles per hour and overturned three times.

He'd survived.

But he hadn't truly awakened.

For forty-nine nights, doctors had watched his monitors, hoping for a meaningful response.

Then my daughter wandered upstairs.

I didn't know she'd slipped away while I was learning where the cleaning supplies were kept.

Clutching her gray stuffed rabbit, Mia pushed open a heavy wooden door.

Inside, Lorenzo lay motionless beneath white sheets, surrounded by machines.

My daughter didn't know who he was.

She only saw a lonely man.

""Mister? Are you sleeping?""

No answer.

She dragged a chair beside his bed and climbed onto it.

""Are you scared?""

Still nothing.

Then she gently took his hand.

""It's okay. I get scared, too.""

And she began singing the lullaby I always sang during thunderstorms.

""You Are My Sunshine.""

Nurse Elena Whitmore appeared in the doorway.

She was about to interrupt when Lorenzo's heart monitor changed.

Five beats faster.

Then seven.

Elena stared.

Nothing like this had happened in weeks.

But Mia kept singing.

When she finished, she kissed Lorenzo's hand.

""Good night, mister. Tomorrow, I'll sing better.""

Then she climbed down and left.

Elena quietly saved the monitor records.

And the next morning, Isabella summoned me.

Now I stood trembling inside her locked office.

""I'm so sorry,"" I whispered. ""Mia didn't understand. Please don't fire me.""

Isabella didn't answer.

Instead, she turned the medical chart toward me.

""Do you know what this means?""

I shook my head.

""For forty-nine nights, my son barely responded to anything.""

Her voice cracked.

""Then your daughter touched him.""

I stared at the numbers.

""Is he... waking up?""

Isabella slowly reached for another sheet of paper.

""Clara, there's something else.""

My stomach tightened.

She pointed to a second reading.

""This happened several minutes after Mia left.""

I looked at the chart.

Then at Isabella's suddenly frightened expression.

""What happened?""

May you like

She leaned closer and whispered:

""My son tried to say something."""
