Chapter 5 - The Secret in Duke’s Collar

I showed the note to Marco before breakfast. He photographed it, checked the cottage cameras, and told me not to touch the collar until he arrived. Luca joined us by the fireplace. Teresa sat close enough to reach Duke with one hand.

"Did Frank hide something in Duke's collar?" Luca asked.

Teresa blinked. "He used to say that dog guarded our best secrets. I thought he meant the family."

The collar was old brown leather, softened by years of use. Marco examined the stitching and found a narrow seam beneath the brass nameplate. Inside lay a tiny folded paper, sealed in clear plastic.

Luca unfolded it carefully. There were three numbers, a date, and the words: THE TRUTH IS IN THE LEDGER. TRUST TERESA.

"Dad's handwriting," he said.

Teresa touched the note as though it were her husband's hand. "He wrote that shortly before he died."

Frank had died after a heart attack four years earlier. Luca had never questioned it. But the date on the paper fell just two days before his father's final hospitalization.

Evelyn recognized the numbers as a safe-deposit reference at a downtown bank. She arranged an appointment with the bank's legal department. Luca wanted to go immediately. Teresa insisted on accompanying him.

"Frank wrote my name," she said. "I'm done letting people decide I'm too old to understand my own life."

At the bank, a clerk checked Teresa's identification and led us to a private room. I was there because Teresa had asked me to come, though I felt out of place among the polished wood and silent security guards.

Inside the box was a blue ledger, a stack of letters, and a photograph of Frank with Dominic and Aldo outside a warehouse. The ledger documented payments from shell companies to construction firms bidding on foundation projects. Several entries carried Dominic's initials.

Evelyn scanned the pages. "These are records of bid manipulation and diverted charitable funds."

Luca looked sick. "My father knew?"

"He was collecting evidence," Evelyn said. "Look at the dates."

One letter was addressed to Luca. His hands shook slightly as he opened it.

My son, it began, I hope you never have to read this. But if you do, choose the kind of man you want to become, not the kind of man our enemies expect.

Luca read silently for several minutes. Then he passed the letter to Teresa. She covered her mouth and wept without making a sound.

Frank had suspected Dominic and Aldo were exploiting the foundation. He had planned to report them, but feared retaliation against his wife. He hid copies of the evidence and left the collar clue because he believed Teresa would never abandon Duke.

"He trusted me," Teresa whispered.

"He knew you," Luca answered.

Outside the bank, two men waited near our vehicle. Marco saw them first and changed our route. We left through a secured entrance while Evelyn contacted investigators. No one chased us, but the sight of those men followed me all the way home.

That evening, Luca sat alone beside the fireplace. Duke rested at his feet. I brought a blanket and found Luca holding Frank's letter.

"He thought I'd turn into someone cruel," Luca said.

"He thought you'd have a choice," I answered.

Luca looked up. "Do you believe people can change?"

I thought of my own mistakes, of nights I'd been impatient with Eli because I was exhausted, and of mornings when I'd apologized and tried again. "Only if they stop making excuses."

He nodded slowly. "Then I have work to do."

Before midnight, Evelyn called. The foundation records were enough to justify an independent investigation. But someone had already filed a complaint accusing Teresa of fabricating evidence and Hannah Collins of stealing from the Moretti home.

My name was suddenly on a legal document I had never seen.

And the accusation came with a date for a police interview.
