Chapter 13 - THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM

Peace never lasted long in the Chicago underworld. Two days later, the calm was shattered. Max burst into Luca's study while we were reviewing medical schedules. “Boss!” Max shouted. “We have a breach!” Luca stood up instantly. “What kind of breach?” “Arthur's remaining loyalists,” Max panted. “They didn't go to prison.” “They regrouped under Arthur's brother, Marco Bellini.” “And where are they?” Luca asked coldly. “They know Sofia's physical therapy clinic schedule.” “They're planning an ambush.” My blood ran cold. “Sofia,” I gasped. “She has her final evaluation at the rehabilitation center this afternoon.” Luca's face hardened into a mask of pure fury. “Max.” “Sir?” “Mobilize every unit.” “Surround the clinic.” “If anyone touches my daughter, leave no survivors.” “Understood,” Max said, turning sharply and running out. Luca turned to me. “Emily, stay here.” “No,” I said firmly. “I'm coming with you.” “It's too dangerous—” “Sofia trusts me,” I interrupted. “If there's an ambush, she'll panic if she doesn't see someone she knows.” “She needs me.” Luca stared at me for three long seconds. Then he nodded. “Get in the bulletproof sedan.” “And stay behind me.” We didn't waste another second. We rushed out to the courtyard. The convoy of black SUVs tore out of the gates, racing toward downtown Chicago.
