Chapter 15 - The Golden Ring, The Lady Of The Estate, And The New Dawn [THE END]

Six months later.
The grand cathedral of Holy Name in downtown Chicago was bathed in brilliant spring sunshine.
The enormous stained-glass windows cast pools of crimson, gold, and sapphire light across the marble aisles.
More than five hundred guests filled the pews: business leaders, city council members, labor union heads, and every capo and lieutenant of the unified syndicate, all dressed in formal black-tie attire.
The church bells rang out across the city, their deep chime echoing off the skyscrapers.
At the altar stood Luca Moretti.
He was magnificent.
Six-foot-four, broad-shouldered, wearing a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo that fit his powerful build perfectly.
His hair was swept back neatly, his beard impeccably trimmed.
On his left wrist was the platinum watch that had been his father’s; on his finger rested the heavy gold signet ring of the Moretti bloodline.
His eyes were fixed on the great wooden doors at the back of the cathedral.
The organ music swelled into the triumphal chords of the bridal march.
The double doors swung open.
I stepped into the light.
I wore an ivory lace gown with an eight-foot silk train that glided across the red carpet like water.
A veil of delicate French tulle covered my face, catching the golden sunlight.
My hands, completely healed with no trace of the scars that had marked them six months ago, held a bouquet of white calla lilies and fresh gardenias.
Walking beside me, escorting me down the aisle with fierce pride in his chest, was Gianni, his arm healed, standing tall as the head of the new family guard.
Every guest stood in silence, watching the woman who had once been an abused maid walk with the grace and majesty of an empress.
When Gianni placed my hand into Luca’s, Luca’s fingers closed around mine with a warmth that sent shivers of pure happiness through every nerve of my body.
Gianni bowed slightly.
“Protect her, Don Moretti.”
“With my life,” Luca replied.
Luca lifted my veil.
His gray eyes softened with a look of pure adoration that made my breath hitch.
“You are the most beautiful vision in God’s world, Claire,” he whispered.
The priest began the holy vows.
When it came time for the rings, Luca slipped the platinum sapphire band onto my left ring finger.
It fit perfectly.
A symbol of truth.
A symbol of loyalty paid in blood, transformed into an eternal bond of love.
I slipped the matching platinum band onto his tattooed finger, over the dark ink that marked his hand.
“By the power vested in me,” the priest pronounced, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Luca didn't wait a heartbeat.
He wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, lifting me slightly off the marble floor, and pressed his lips to mine.
The cathedral erupted into deafening applause.
The capos stood and cheered.
Flower petals of white and gold rained down from the choir balcony above us.
We walked out of the cathedral hand in hand into the warm spring breeze.
A fleet of black town cars waited along Michigan Avenue, their drivers snapping to attention with crisp salutes.
The city of Chicago belonged to us.
Not through fear, terror, or betrayal.
But through honor, strength, and an unbreakable love that had survived fire and blood.
That evening, we returned to the estate.
The grand dining hall was set for a private dinner for two.
Above the antique fireplace, where the heavy gold mirror had once been mounted to hide a wiretap—
A magnificent new portrait had been hung.
An oil painting of Elena Moretti and Frank Dawson standing side by side beneath the blooming willow tree in the garden, both smiling peacefully in the sunlight.
Luca stood behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin against the crown of my head.
“What are you thinking, Mrs. Moretti?” he murmured into my ear.
I looked at the portrait of our family.
Then down at the sapphire ring gleaming in the warm candlelight.
“I was thinking,” I whispered, turning in his arms to wrap my hands around his neck, “that the mirror only showed the darkness of the past.”
Luca smiled, his lips pressing softly against mine.
“And what do you see now, my love?”
I kissed him back, letting my soul sink into the strength and devotion of the man who had given me the world.
May you like
“I see our dawn.”
