Chapter 5 - The Engagement That Started a War

The announcement appeared on every major Chicago gossip account before breakfast: CALEB VALE TO WED BUSINESS HEIRESS VIVIENNE CROSS. The accompanying photograph showed Caleb beside a woman in emerald silk at a gala two years earlier. Hannah read the caption three times. She had no claim on Caleb, no promise from him, and no right to feel the sudden ache in her chest. Still, it hurt.
At noon, Dominic hosted a luncheon at the Vale Foundation headquarters. Hannah arrived as temporary catering staff, wearing the same black uniform she wore at Bellamy's. Nora had arranged the assignment through an old friend. Caleb had warned her that coming would be dangerous. She came anyway, determined to see whether the engagement was another cage built around him.
The ballroom glittered with crystal and camera flashes. Vivienne Cross stood beside Dominic, beautiful and composed, her smile never reaching her eyes. Dominic praised the union as a partnership between two distinguished Chicago families. Then he placed a hand on Caleb's shoulder and announced that his son was 'delighted.'
Before the luncheon, Caleb and Hannah exchanged a long series of messages. He told her he had met Vivienne only three times, always at events arranged by their parents. Hannah wrote that he owed nobody a marriage. His reply was simple: I know that now.
Caleb did not smile. He looked across the crowd until he found Hannah. Their eyes met. Then, before the cameras, he raised his hands and signed a single sentence: I did not consent.
Most guests kept applauding. A few stopped, confused. Hannah felt the room tilt. Dominic grabbed Caleb's wrist, forcing his hands down. 'Enough,' he whispered. The microphones caught it.
Hannah stepped forward before she could reconsider. 'Mr. Vale,' she said clearly, 'your son just said he did not agree to this engagement.'
Vivienne had been told Caleb was incapable of understanding contracts, but the young woman had studied the family trust and suspected Dominic needed a marriage to control its voting rights. She had planned to refuse privately. Caleb’s public stand gave her the courage to refuse in front of witnesses.
The applause died. A photographer lifted his camera. Dominic's expression emptied of color. Vivienne's smile vanished, replaced by something close to relief.
'You're a waitress,' Dominic said. 'You don't speak for my family.'
'I'm translating his words,' Hannah answered. 'He can speak for himself.'
As the investigators entered, Hannah noticed that Rourke was no longer beside Dominic. The bodyguard had slipped toward a service corridor. Caleb noticed too. He signed to Hannah: Remember the ring. This is not over.
Caleb lifted his hands again. This time he signed slowly enough for every phone camera to record: My name is Caleb Vale. I am deaf, not incapable. I will not marry a stranger to protect my father's business.
Vivienne stepped away from Dominic. 'He's right,' she said. 'I never agreed to this either.' The ballroom erupted. Dominic ordered security to remove Hannah, but Caleb moved between her and Rourke. The silver-ringed bodyguard reached for Caleb's arm. Caleb caught his wrist and held it. The movement was swift, controlled, and utterly unlike the helpless figure Dominic had spent years describing.
Dominic leaned close to his son. 'You have no idea what you've done.'
Caleb answered in sign, and Hannah translated without hesitation. 'I've stopped letting you decide who I am.'
A woman at the back of the room screamed. Two uniformed investigators entered with a warrant for records belonging to the Vale Foundation. Behind them walked a man Hannah recognized from the photograph hidden behind Caleb's mirror.
Victor Sloane was alive.
He looked straight at Dominic and said, 'It's time we talked about what really happened at the lake house.'

Caleb's hand found Hannah's. She held on as the cameras turned toward them, and she understood that the story everyone thought they knew had only just begun.
