Chapter 11 - The Day Daniel Died

The reopened investigation found that Daniel's construction-site assignment had been altered hours before his death. A supervisor with financial ties to Sterling Legal Services had ordered him into an area closed for inspection. Security footage was missing, but a backup camera from a neighboring building had captured a company truck entering the site after hours.
Mara traced the truck to a contractor who had worked for Richard. Confronted with the footage and payment records, the man admitted he had been paid to sabotage equipment. He claimed Richard ordered only an intimidation, not a death. The distinction offered me no comfort.
I listened to the evidence in a quiet room with a victim advocate beside me. I learned how the man I loved had died, and I learned that his final act had been trying to get a warning to me.
For weeks I'd wondered whether Daniel's secrets made our marriage false. Now I understood that two things could be true: he'd hidden something enormous, and the tenderness between us had been real.
Vincent visited that evening. He placed Daniel's recovered wedding ring on the table, sealed in a small evidence-return envelope. "The detective said you could have this back."
I held the ring and cried until my chest hurt.
"You don't owe my family a single thing," Vincent said. "Whatever you decide after your baby is born, we'll respect it."
I looked at the ring. "I want my daughter to know what her father did. But I also want her to know who he was when nobody was watching."

Vincent nodded. "Then we'll tell her both stories."
The next morning Mara announced that prosecutors had approved charges against Richard and several accomplices. Richard, however, had vanished before the arrest team reached his house.
