Chapter 12 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The muddy lawn erupted into a chaotic brawl.

Mr. Bellini hammered his fists into Vance's face, seeking vengeance for his daughter and his ruined legacy.

Federal marshals swarmed them both, pulling Bellini off and slapping steel handcuffs on Assistant Director Vance.

Vance screamed incoherently as he was dragged toward the back of a police cruiser.

Flashlights cut through the rainy darkness.

Paramedics rushed over, checking Leo and me for injuries.

The little boy was exhausted, resting his head sleepily against my shoulder.

"You okay, Miss Emma?" Leo mumbled softly.

"I'm okay, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing the top of his head. "We're going to be just fine."

Luca walked over to us, his clothes charred and stained with soot.

He knelt down in the mud beside Leo.

"You're safe now, son," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion.

Leo smiled sleepily, reaching out to touch Luca's cheek.

"Daddy," the boy murmured.

Luca closed his eyes, a single tear cutting a clean path through the soot on his face.

He had spent his whole life believing he was alone in a world of monsters.

Tonight, he found out he had a family.

Vanessa stumbled out from behind a fire truck.

Her expensive red gown was ruined, covered in mud and ash.

She looked at Luca with hollow, defeated eyes.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice breaking.

Luca stood up slowly.

He looked at the woman he had trusted.

The woman who had traded their son's safety for power and social standing.

"You're done, Vanessa," Luca said quietly. "Your father's empire is gone. Your deals with Vance are public record. You will never see Leo again."

She collapsed to her knees in the wet grass, sobbing into her hands.

There were no bodyguards left to save her.

No fortune left to hide behind.

Sal walked over, standing beside Luca and me.

He adjusted his chauffeur's cap, tipping it respectfully.

"Well, Mr. Moretti," Sal said with a faint smile. "Looks like you need a new engagement ring. But I think your schedule just opened up."

Luca let out a genuine, booming laugh.

May you like

The first real laugh I had heard in the ten months I worked in that house.

[CLIFFHANGER: As the police cruisers hauled away the last of the conspirators, Luca turned to me in the flickering glow of the burning mansion and asked a question that changed my life forever.]
