Chapter 11 - THE FINAL SHOWDOWNThe gunshot cracked through the night air.

I screamed, closing my eyes.
Clang!
A heavy metal spark flew through the air.
The bullet hadn't hit Sophie.
Daniel had fired from the shadows of a shipping container, striking the barrel of Isabella’s gun and knocking it spinning out of her hand.
“Now!” Gabriel bellowed.
He lunged forward with terrifying speed.
Before Isabella could recover, Gabriel tackled her hard against the wooden railing of the pier.
The gun clattered across the wet wood and splashed into the dark ocean below.
“You monster!” Gabriel snarled, pinning Isabella against the rail.
She thrashed and screamed, clawing at his face, but he held her down with iron strength.
I didn't wait.
I sprinted past them toward Sophie.
The little girl was on her knees, crying uncontrollably.
I dropped to the wood, wrapping my arms around her.
“You’re safe, sweetheart. I’ve got you. You’re safe,” I whispered, rocking her back and forth.
Sophie buried her face in my shoulder, her small hands clutching my jacket.
Behind us, Daniel rushed up with heavy zip-ties.
He grabbed Isabella’s wrists and hauled her to her feet, slamming her against the side of the container.
“You’re done, Miss Marconi,” Daniel said coldly, securing the ties.
Isabella spat blood onto the wood, laughing like a madwoman.
“You think locking me up changes anything, Gabriel? My family owns half the judges in this city! I’ll be out in a month!”
Gabriel walked slowly toward her.
His face was carved from stone.
“Your family is finished, Isabella,” Gabriel said quietly.
“Viktor is dead. Your assets are frozen. And the federal prosecutor already has the medical records of my late wife.”
Isabella’s manic laughter finally died in her throat.
Her eyes widened in genuine terror.
“You... you went to the feds?”
“I gave them everything,” Gabriel replied.
“You’ll spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison.”
She opened her mouth to scream, but Daniel shoved her into the back of a waiting backup SUV.
The doors slammed shut.
The vehicle sped away into the foggy night.
The silence that followed on the pier was overwhelming.
Only the sound of the crashing waves remained.
Gabriel stood near the edge of the wooden boards, staring out into the dark ocean.
He looked exhausted.
Broken, yet somehow lighter.
He turned around slowly and walked toward us.
He knelt down beside Sophie and me.
Sophie slowly opened her eyes.
She looked at her father, her lower lip quivering.
Gabriel reached out, his hand trembling slightly, and gently wiped a tear from her cheek.
Using slow, clumsy signs—the ones he had practiced in secret—he signed:
Are you okay, my love?
Sophie stared at him in astonishment.
Then a small, genuine smile broke through her tears.
She nodded.
And signed back:
I knew you would come.
Gabriel pulled both of us into his arms.
May you like
We sat there on the cold wooden pier as the rain finally began to clear, letting the first rays of dawn break over the Chicago skyline.
