Chapter 5 - My Employer's Brother Had the Folder

Carlo had been Antonio's right hand since their father died. He knew every guard's schedule, every locked gate, every account the family used. Antonio refused to believe his brother had betrayed him until he saw the footage from the chapel entrance.
Carlo admitted taking the folder. He claimed he wanted to keep it away from Isabella. “You have no idea what she knows,” he said.
“Then tell me,” Antonio replied.
Carlo looked at me. “Not in front of the cook.”
I turned to leave, but Antonio stopped me. “Grace stays.”
Carlo's expression darkened. He said Elena had discovered that Victor Sloane was diverting money from the foundation. She planned to expose him. Carlo claimed he had helped her gather records and hidden copies in room seventeen.
“Why didn't you tell me?” Antonio demanded.
“Because I thought the evidence burned with her.”
“Then why did you go to the chapel tonight?”
Carlo hesitated. “Isabella called me. She said Mia had found a key.”
The answer settled over the room like smoke. Isabella had known what the key opened. She had sent Carlo to retrieve whatever Elena left behind.

Antonio called for Isabella. Her suite was empty. Her jewelry case was open, and the expensive red gown she wore at dinner lay on the bed. The security gate had recorded a car leaving twenty minutes earlier.
On Isabella's vanity, someone had written a message in lipstick across the mirror: ASK CARLO ABOUT THE SECOND FIRE.
