Chapter 6 - The Wedding That Was a Trap

Maya spread the contingency schedule across Adrian's conference table. It described a proposed restructuring that would have given Celeste a management role in a new family holding company after marriage. The document did not, by itself, transfer control of the children's trusts. But it showed how the Romanos intended to use the wedding to pressure Adrian into signing agreements he had never been shown.
Adrian remembered Celeste insisting on a private ceremony with paperwork handled before the reception. He had assumed she wanted to avoid gossip. Now he understood why she had kept asking him to sign things quickly.
Claire watched him study the pages. “You couldn't have known what she hid,” she said.
“I could have asked more questions.”
“That part you can change.”
He looked up, surprised by her refusal to flatter him. Most people in his world told him whatever would make him easier to live with. Claire told him what was true.
Maya found that the missing paralegal, Lena Ortiz, had contacted a whistleblower attorney two days before the engagement dinner. Through counsel, Lena agreed to speak with investigators. She said Elias had ordered staff to assemble documents using scans of existing signatures. She also said Celeste had personally requested Rosa's rehabilitation schedule.
Celeste denied requesting anything for a dishonest purpose. She claimed she wanted to coordinate care. Maya treated that claim as something to test, not something to dismiss without evidence.
Meanwhile, Elias held a press conference outside his company headquarters. He described the dispute as a family misunderstanding and accused Adrian of trying to destroy a legitimate development that would create jobs. Reporters asked about the forged signatures. Elias refused to answer.
At home, Rosa watched a brief news clip and shook her head. “Jobs... matter,” she told Adrian. “But... not... lies.”
Adrian sat beside her. “I know.”
“No,” she said, squeezing his hand. “Show... me.”
Her challenge stayed with him. He had built a reputation as a man who could make problems disappear. He had also inherited connections that made ordinary people afraid to speak. If he wanted to protect Rosa and his children, he needed to stop relying on fear and start relying on people willing to testify.
He instructed his team to cooperate with lawful requests, preserve records, and avoid contact with witnesses unless arranged through counsel. Some of his oldest associates complained that he was going soft. Adrian told them that protecting his family meant more than winning a fight.
The next morning, Claire received an anonymous message: Tell the boss to check the bakery's basement before the city does.
She showed Adrian immediately. He called Maya, who advised involving the appropriate authorities before anyone disturbed possible evidence. Inspectors arrived that afternoon. Behind a false wall, they found sealed boxes of old development files, including a map of underground utility access beneath several neighboring buildings.

And taped to the map was a photograph of Frank DeLuca standing beside Elias Romano.
Across the bottom, in Frank's handwriting, were six words: If anything happens, ask my wife.
