Chapter 7 - A Threat at the School Gate

The first real threat came on a rainy Tuesday. Olivia's driver noticed a van following the school bus route and called Marcus. Security followed established procedures, kept Olivia inside the school office, and contacted police. No one was hurt. The van disappeared before officers arrived, but cameras captured its plates. The registration was fraudulent.
Nathan reached the school while Olivia was still coloring at a table with the principal. She ran to him and clung to his coat. "Did I do something wrong?" she whispered. "No," he said, kneeling. "An adult made a dangerous choice. The adults responsible for keeping you safe are handling it." He did not tell her that everything would be fine. He promised she would not have to face it alone.
Lily waited at home, terrified by what might have happened. When Olivia returned, she signed I WAS SCARED. Lily signed back ME TOO. They sat together on the living-room rug until Olivia's breathing slowed. Nathan watched from the doorway and understood that safety was more than gates and guards. It was the freedom to admit fear without being punished for it.
Sofia obtained a protective order based on the harassment and began coordinating evidence with the district attorney's office. The false plate and school surveillance were added to the case. Marcus increased security, but Nathan refused to turn the mansion into a prison. Olivia would still attend school when authorities deemed it safe, and Lily would have the choice to stay elsewhere if she wished.
That night Nathan found Lily on the terrace, wrapped in a wool sweater. "I keep thinking about the moment Victoria took my hearing aid," she said. "I felt so small. Now everything has become enormous." Nathan stood a respectful distance away. "You didn't cause any of this. People made choices before you knew their names." Lily looked at him. "And you're choosing to uncover them." "Yes." "Even if it costs you your empire?" Nathan thought of Olivia at the school gate. "An empire that requires a child to be afraid isn't worth keeping."
The police found the van abandoned near an industrial park. Inside was a disposable phone with a message instructing the driver to photograph Olivia and "remind Blackwood what matters." The sender was unidentified. Nathan's anger was immediate and frightening. Marcus asked whether he wanted to send men to the Ashford estate. Nathan took a long moment before answering. "No. Give the phone records to the investigators." Marcus nodded, relieved.
Victoria called Nathan that evening. "My father is losing control," she said without greeting. "He thinks Lily has something that belongs to him." Nathan asked if she was willing to give a formal statement. Victoria laughed bitterly. "You want me to destroy my own family?" "I want you to stop helping someone threaten mine." She hung up.

An hour later Victoria arrived at the police station, wearing sunglasses despite the darkness. She told a detective about her father's safe, his references to Pier Nine, and a name she had overheard: Daniel Cross. She refused to apologize for what she had done to Lily, and she insisted that her cooperation should be kept out of the press. The detective took notes without promising her protection from consequences.
At the manor, Olivia asked her father whether brave people were ever scared. Nathan thought of Lily standing before a table full of wealthy strangers, asking for the device she needed to hear. "All the time," he said. Olivia considered that, then signed a word she had taught him earlier. TOGETHER. He signed it back. For once, his hands did not stumble.
