Chapter 11 - Under the Gun: Held Hostage by the Bride in Red

================================================================================

The steel shipping container at the Calumet docks had seemed like the final period at the end of a bloody sentence.

We were wrong.

It was barely past five in the morning when the dawn twilight painted the wet asphalt outside Warehouse 4 in bruised shades of lavender and gunmetal grey. The federal agents Luca had tipped off through an anonymous backchannel were still thirty minutes out. Most of our perimeter team was coordinating transport for the seized records, their attention divided as heavy machinery was loaded onto flatbeds.

I stood beside the command SUV, sipping lukewarm bottled water to soothe the raw ache in my throat. Luca was fifty feet away near the water’s edge, his phone to his ear, speaking in sharp, clipped sentences with his attorney to finalize the handover of the Falcone-Bellini shipping manifests.

A muffled clang came from the shadow of the rusted container.

I frowned, lowering the plastic bottle.

The padlocks on the primary cargo doors were still in place. But Warehouse 4 had originally been built with an auxiliary escape hatch near the rear wall—an ancient ventilation chute used during Prohibition to vent grain dust.

Before I could call out to Dante or turn toward Luca, a cold, violent force slammed into my back.

A wire-thin cord whipped around my throat, cutting off my scream in a searing choke.

"Make one sound and I will sever your carotid before your boss can turn his head," a ragged, venom-laced whisper hissed into my ear.

Vanessa Bellini.

She had somehow slipped through the narrow lower grate where the floor plate had rotted away. Her fingers were bloody, her fingernails torn down to the quick, and her designer clothes were caked in foul black river sludge. But her eyes were burning with a deranged, feral adrenaline.

In her right hand, pressed hard beneath my left ear, was not a gun, but a six-inch piece of jagged, rusted iron rebar she had pried from the quarry debris.

The rusted point broke my skin immediately, warm blood trickling down my collar.

"Move backward," she snarled, pulling the wire tight against my windpipe. "Toward the catwalk stairs. Now!"

I couldn't draw breath to shout. Black spots danced before my vision as she dragged me backward into the cavernous darkness beneath the crane housing. My boots scuffled against the concrete, kicking over an empty oil can.

The metal hollow thud echoed across the quiet pier.

Luca turned instantly.

The phone dropped from his hand, bouncing into the dark river water below.

"Emily!"

In a heartbeat, Luca was running. His face, usually a fortress of unyielding control, shattered into pure panic.

"Stay where you are, Luca!" Vanessa shrieked from thirty feet up the iron stairs, hauling me against the rusted railing. "Take one more step and I drive this iron through her eye socket! I swear to God I will!"

Luca skidded to a halt at the foot of the stairs.

Behind him, Dante and four enforcers drew their weapons, aiming their barrels upward, but the angle was impossible; Vanessa had wrapped herself completely behind my body, using my chest as a human shield.

"Put the metal down, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice dropping into a deadly, trembling frequency. His hands were raised, open, displaying an utter lack of aggression that no capo in Chicago had ever seen from him. "Your war is with me. Not with her."

"My war is with everything you love!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking as tears cut clean lines through the dried mud on her cheeks. "Look at me! Look at what you did to the Bellini name! My father is fleeing the country! My brother is crippled in that box! And you gave my ring to a maid! A girl who scrubbed the mud off my boots two days ago!"

"You killed my brother," Luca growled, taking a single, imperceptible inch forward onto the bottom step.

"Your father killed your brother!" Vanessa wept hysterically. "Lorenzo and I were just surviving! If we hadn't done it, Antonio would have wiped out our family in an afternoon! We did what we had to do! And you... you acted like you loved me for four years while you used our docks to double your fortune!"

The rusted iron bit deeper into the soft flesh of my neck. I squeezed my eyes shut against the sharp, stinging pain, but beneath the fear, a cold, stubborn fire ignited in my chest.

I remembered the weight inside my heavy coat.

The small, compact 9mm pistol Luca had given me at the safehouse was still resting in my right pocket.

Vanessa’s left arm was hooked around my throat, choking my breath. But my right arm was pinned only against my hip, partially covered by the wide folds of the heavy wool coat.

Slowly, millimeter by millimeter, I slid my trembling fingers into the pocket.

"You want an empire, Luca?" Vanessa taunted from behind me, her hot, frantic breath washing over my cheek. "You want to rebuild on my family's grave? Then you can watch her bleed out on this metal grate. Let's see if your little servant girl can survive eighty feet of water like your brother did!"

She tightened her grip, preparing to shove me backward over the low waist-high railing into the freezing river.

"Emily, no!" Luca shouted, lunging forward.

*Now.*

I didn't try to pull the gun out. There was no time to clear the fabric or aim.

I gripped the rubberized handle inside the coat pocket, flipped the thumb safety off with a soft click, and jammed the muzzle backward through the wool fabric, straight into Vanessa's lower abdomen.

I pulled the trigger.

*BANG!*

The muffled shot blew through the lining of Luca's coat.

A sharp, violent jolt went through Vanessa's body. The iron rebar slipped from her blood-slick fingers, clattering against the metal stairs.

She let out a wet, hollow gasp, her eyes widening in absolute shock as she looked down at the smoking hole in her side.

"You..." she choked.

Before she could recover, I drove my right elbow hard into her shattered jaw—the exact place she had struck me on the chapel steps.

Bone cracked.

Vanessa staggered backward, losing her footing on the wet iron landing.

Luca vaulted the remaining ten stairs in a single leap, catching me by the waist and pulling me violently away from the edge just as Vanessa slipped through the gap in the rusted railing.

She didn't scream.

With a dull, hollow thud, she hit the lower concrete retaining wall thirty feet below, rolling limp into the shallow mud at the water's edge.

Luca slammed me against his chest, wrapping both arms around me so tightly I could barely breathe, his face buried in my hair as his entire massive frame trembled with aftershocks of terror.

"I’ve got you," he breathed raggedly, his voice breaking. "I’ve got you, Emily. You’re safe. You’re safe."

I dropped the smoking gun from my coat pocket. My hands shook so hard they felt disconnected from my wrists, but as I buried my face in his neck, smelling the crisp cedar and gunpowder on his skin, I knew the nightmare had finally broken.

May you like

The sirens of federal law enforcement were finally wailing in the distance, cutting through the morning mist like the trumpets of dawn.
