Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION

The warehouse grew colder as the night wore on.

Luca tied Vance securely to a steel pillar with industrial zip-ties.

Matteo sat on the edge of the metal table, rubbing his bruised temple.

He looked exhausted.

The fierce, untouchable mafia boss had vanished, leaving only a man weighed down by decades of guilt.

"Talk," I demanded, crossing my arms. "Start talking right now."

Matteo looked up at me.

"Fifteen years ago, my father wasn't running a legitimate shipping empire," he began softly. "He was a monster. He used our family name to traffic drugs and launder cartel money through European banks."

"And my mother?"

"Your mother was hired as our lead translator because she was the best linguist in Philadelphia," Matteo said. "She thought she was working for a legitimate import-export firm."

"When did she find out the truth?"

"The night of November 12th."

Matteo stood up and walked over to the briefcase.

He pulled out a folded document from the bottom compartment.

He handed it to me.

I unfolded the paper.

It was a signed confession and banking transfer record.

"She discovered my father and Arthur Vance were embezzling syndicate funds and framing federal officials," Matteo said. "When she tried to walk away, my father ordered her execution."

My hands shook so violently the paper rattled.

"And you?"

"I was twenty-2 years old," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I found out what my father was planning. I tried to stop him."

He pointed to the old photograph he had shown me in the restaurant.

"The blood on my shirt in that picture? It was mine. My father shot me when I tried to help your mother escape."

I stared at him, the pieces finally clicking together in my mind.

"She saved your life."

"She dragged me bleeding into an underground bunker," Matteo said, looking straight into my eyes. "She gave me her own jacket to stem the bleeding, and she told me to run."

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"Because Vance controlled the police," Matteo said bitterly. "Half the precinct was on my father's payroll. The only way I could survive—and the only way I could protect your mother from the shadows—was to take over the family from the inside."

I stared at the man standing before me.

The arrogant restaurant patron.

The dangerous syndicate boss.

The protector who had spent fifteen years tracking down the corrupt men who destroyed my family.

"Why didn't you tell me this at Bellaforte?"

"Because if I told you the truth," Matteo said quietly, "you would have run away terrified. And right now... running means death."

Before I could answer, Vance groaned on the floor.

The corrupt agent slowly lifted his head, spitting blood onto the concrete.

"You think you won, Matteo?" Vance chuckled darkly. "Check your phone."

Matteo's expression froze.

He pulled out his smartphone.

The screen flashed a single emergency broadcast notification.

FEDERAL WARRANT ISSUED: MORETTI SYNDICATE RAIDS COMMENCING AT DAWN.

And beneath it, a personal text message from an unknown number:
