Chapter 14 - THE FINAL BOARDROOM MASSACRE: STRIPPING THE BELLINI EMPIRE TO ASHES

================================================================================

The Palmer House in downtown Chicago was the traditional neutral ground of the syndicate, an opulent landmark of gilded plaster, velvet curtains, and crystal that had witnessed the partition of city territories since the days of Al Capone.

At precisely eight o’clock that morning, the grand double doors of the private Empire Room were guarded by twelve armed sentries bearing the colors of the five founding families.

Inside, the room was thick with the heavy scent of espresso, cigar smoke, and nervous sweat.

Capo Falcone and Capo Marcone sat at the massive oak council table, flanked by the leaders of the South Side and West Side syndicates. At the far end of the room, flanked by two federal marshals who had been "persuaded" to observe from the shadows, sat the high council’s legal arbiters.

When the double doors opened, every man in the room rose to his feet.

I walked in first.

I had changed out of the torn gown into an immaculate, tailored three-piece suit cut from cream-colored wool, paired with a high-collared silk blouse that concealed the dressing on my neck while leaving the Isabella black diamond pendant proudly on display. Dr. Harris had replaced the facial tape with a fine, cosmetic silicone strip that was nearly invisible beneath a dusting of powder. My chestnut hair was swept back into an elegant French twist, accentuating the high, aristocratic lines of my jaw.

On my left hand, the ruby serpent ring burned like an open flame.

Beside me walked Luca Moretti.

He was dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal bespoke suit, his posture radiating the absolute, terrifying majesty of a king returning from a victorious crusade. Dante walked two paces behind, carrying a heavy leather briefcase embossed with the seal of the Cook County Maritime Trust.

Behind them, escorted by two armed operators, were Antonio Bellini and Vanessa.

Antonio looked like a corpse in a rented suit. His arm was in a medical sling, his eyes hollow, staring at the floor with the vacant gaze of a man whose execution date had already passed.

Vanessa was stripped of her fur, her jewelry, and her pride. She wore a plain gray prison-issue smock provided by the holding facility, her platinum hair tangled and greasy, her wrists clamped in heavy steel cuffs. She couldn't even raise her head; the shame and the horror of her total destruction weighed her down like lead.

A collective murmur rippled through the gathered capos.

Capo Falcone leaned forward, his ancient hands trembling slightly against his cane. "Don Moretti. You called this assembly under the emergency provisions of Article Four."

"I did," Luca said, his voice ringing through the vast hall with absolute, commanding authority.

He did not take a seat. He stood at the head of the table, resting his hands on the carved mahogany back of the throne-like center chair, framing me as I took the seat of honor.

"Last night," Luca announced, "the Bellini faction made an attempt on the lives of myself and my pledged consort, Olivia Vance, daughter of Sophia Moretti. They used cyanide in my personal residence, and they deployed automatic weapons in a residential sector of the 24th Ward."

He nodded to Dante.

Dante stepped forward, popped the latches of the leather briefcase, and placed three heavy items onto the council table with deliberate, echoing thuds:

First, the encrypted flash drive containing the decrypted security footage of the Drake Hotel bombing handoff from seven years ago.

Second, the signed confession of Mercer, witnessed and certified by Dr. Harris.

And third, the heavy, brass-bound volume bound in black leather: *The Black Book of Cook County*.

When Capo Falcone’s rheumy eyes landed on the gold-embossed serpent on the cover of the Black Book, he let out a sharp, wheezing breath, crossing himself with a trembling right hand.

"The Vincenzo Ledger," Falcone breathed in terror. "Mother of God... it survived."

"It survived," Luca confirmed, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal timber. "And inside are the records showing that Antonio Bellini’s father embezzled forty million dollars from the syndicate pension trust in 1968, framing Sophia Moretti’s husband to cover the theft."

Antonio didn't protest. He simply closed his eyes and let his head drop toward his chest.

Luca turned his gaze to Capo Falcone and Capo Marcone. "Under the 1948 Charter, I demand the complete dissolution of the Bellini family seat on the High Council. I demand the immediate transfer of all maritime distribution contracts, all port facilities, and all commercial real estate holdings to the Moretti Trust."

Capo Falcone looked around the table. Not a single boss raised an objection. To challenge Luca Moretti today was suicide; he held the Black Book, he held the docks, and he held the unquestioned military dominance of the city.

Falcone raised his hand. "The Council concurs. The House of Bellini is stripped of all titles, territories, and honors. The name is erased from the registry."

Marcone nodded once, his face grim. "So spoken, so sealed."

Luca turned his attention to Vanessa, who was trembling violently in her cuffs.

"As for Vanessa Bellini," Luca said, his voice flat as a frozen lake. "She is remanded into the custody of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. The flash drive on this table contains forty-two counts of interstate extortion, conspiracy to commit murder, and racketeering. She will spend the remainder of her natural life in the federal women's penitentiary in Pekin, Illinois."

Vanessa let out a strangled, breathless wail as two federal marshals stepped forward, gripping her arms and hauling her toward the side exit. As she passed my chair, she looked at me—one last, desperate look of pure, agonizing defeat.

I didn't sneer. I didn't mock her. I simply looked at her with the cool, serene detachment of a queen watching trash being swept from the palace floor.

When the doors clicked shut behind her, the room exhaled a collective breath.

Luca turned to the council, his hand settling warmly, possessively over mine on the table.

"The business of the Bellini family is concluded," Luca declared. "Now, we discuss the wedding."
