Chapter 11 - THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL

Vincent Moretti smiled.

His eyes were cold, dead things.

"Put the guns down," Moretti repeated.

Dante slowly lowered his rifle, his jaw clenched in fury.

"Let her go, Moretti," Dante said.

"This is between you and me."

"She holds the ledger, Dante," Moretti laughed.

"She holds everything."

Moretti stepped further into the cabin, keeping his gun trained on Dante.

"Your father is dead. The empire is weak."

"The empire outlives us all," Dante said quietly.

"Not today." Moretti raised his pistol higher.

My finger rested gently on the trigger of my rifle beneath the table.

Moretti didn't see me.

He was too busy gloating over his victory.

"Say hello to Salvatore for me," Moretti whispered.

He began to squeeze the trigger.

I didn't hesitate.

I rose from behind the table and fired.

The bullet struck Moretti's shoulder.

He screamed and dropped his weapon.

Dante moved with lightning speed.

He tackled Moretti to the floor, pinning him down.

Moretti's remaining men rushed the doorway.

Before they could fire, a barrage of gunfire erupted from behind them.

More men in black suits swarmed the cabin.

Dante's loyalists.

The remaining Moretti guards dropped their weapons and surrendered.

The room fell silent, save for Moretti's groans of pain.

Dante stood up slowly, wiping blood from his forehead.

He looked down at Moretti.

"It's over, Vincent," Dante said.

Moretti spat blood onto the wooden floor.

"You think you won, Gallo? There are others."

"Let them come," Dante replied coldly.

He looked over at me.

I lowered the rifle, my breathing steady.

The shy waitress was gone.

Nora Gallo had arrived.
