Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass And The Bloodied Lip

The cold burn of bleach and hot steam had been my entire world for fourteen hours straight before Mrs. Chen shoved that black gala vest into my hands and told me I was covering champagne service in the grand ballroom. My fingers were already raw from scrubbing marble floors on the twelfth floor, and my mind was fractured between worrying about the towering stacks of hospital bills waiting on our cramped kitchen table and listening to the soft, rhythmic wheezing of my mother’s breathing through the speakerphone app in my pocket. Fifteen-year-old Daniel was handling it as best as he could, but every time my phone vibrated against my ribs, a cold knot of dread tightened in my stomach. I couldn't lose this job. If I lost this job, the electricity would go, the oxygen tanks would stop, and everything we had left would vanish into the harsh winter night.

Stepping into the glittering ballroom felt like walking onto another planet. Crystal chandeliers threw rainbows across hundred-dollar tablecloths, and elite socialites laughed behind expensive champagne flutes. My supervisor barked instructions about matching gold tags to seating charts, and I forced my legs to move, weaving through the sea of silk and tailored suits. That was when I saw him enter. Victor Romano. The man whose name was whispered in hushed tones across every news outlet and dark street corner in the city. He walked with an effortless, lethal grace, his dark eyes scanning the room with absolute predatory detachment, his gorgeous fiancée, Clara Whitmore, clinging to his arm like a glittering prize.

Minutes later, trapped near the service corridor behind table eighteen, I overheard a conversation that made my blood run instantly cold. Clara and Victor's chief advisor, Leon Mercer, were speaking in low, venomous whispers, plotting the exact moment of the toast when a poisoned glass would be handed to the boss. My heart slammed violently against my ribs. When I later found a solitary glass marked with a distinct red dot sitting apart on a service tray, designated specifically for Table One, Seat One, panic clawed at my throat. As the room erupted into applause following Victor's speech, his terrifying security chief, Dmitri, reached for the doomed crystal flute.

I didn't think. I didn't calculate the consequences. I only knew that if I let him drink, blood would stain the marble, and if I stayed silent, I would be an accomplice to murder. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, I lunged forward, knocked the tray flying, and struck Victor Romano squarely across the mouth.

The crystal shattered into a thousand glittering shards against the floor. Dmitri’s massive hands seized my arms instantly, slamming my spine hard against a marble pillar as screams echoed across the ballroom. Victor straightened slowly, a thin line of bright crimson blood tracing down from his split lip, his dark gaze locking onto me with terrifying intensity. Before he could demand an explanation for my apparent insanity, Dmitri’s radio hissed to life with a message from the kitchens that froze the air in my lungs: someone had planted my fingerprints on a second poisoned glass. The trap had just sprung, and I was standing right in the center of its jaws.
