Chapter 13 - The Final Showdown And The Collapse Of Isabella's Empire

The heavy silence inside the River North gallery was broken only by the cold, metallic click of safety catches releasing across the room. Isabella’s two New York enforcers froze, their hands hovering nervously near their concealed holsters, looking around wildly as they realized every exit had been completely sealed. Marcus stepped forward from the loft staircase, his boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor, holding a heavy zip-tie restraint in one hand. “Drop your weapons and place your hands on the pedestal, or you won't live to see the state line,” Marcus ordered, his voice carrying the absolute, unyielding authority of a veteran enforcer who had seen a thousand betrayals. The two New York men looked toward Isabella, seeking guidance, but she was staring at me in sheer, unadulterated panic. Her hands trembled as she clutched her designer handbag. “You can't do this!” Isabella shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. “The New York syndicate will declare total war on Chicago! You're bringing an entire bloodbath down on your own head!” I walked slowly toward her, my heels making a crisp, steady sound against the floor, stopping just an arm's length away. I looked down at her with calm, absolute authority. “War?” I asked softly. “Isabella, you seem to forget something. Gabriel tried to wage war against his own family, and he lost everything. You are nothing more than a footnote in a failed hostile takeover.” With a swift nod from me, Marcus and his men moved in, disarming the New York enforcers in seconds and securing their hands behind their backs. Isabella tried to back away, but her heels caught on the edge of a display rug, and she stumbled, grabbing onto a sculpture pedestal to keep from falling. I reached down, picked up the fraudulent legal document she had brought, and tore it deliberately into four pieces, letting the fragments flutter uselessly to the floor. “Take them to the warehouse basement,” I instructed Marcus without breaking eye contact with Isabella. “Let the federal investigators pick up whatever is left of their little conspiracy by morning.” Isabella glared at me with venomous hatred as she was led away toward the freight elevator, her voice echoing off the brick walls. “This isn't over, Claire! Gabriel will get out, and he will destroy you!” But as the heavy steel doors closed shut, sealing her fate, I knew the truth: Gabriel Moretti was history, and the Chicago syndicate was finally free.
