Chapter 11 - THE RESCUE AND THE FALL

Luca crossed the ten-foot gap in a fraction of a second.
He slammed his fist into Rebecca's wrist.
The detonator flew from her hand, clattering across the concrete floor.
Rebecca shrieked, clawing at his face.
Luca pinned her arms behind her back with brutal efficiency.
"Marcus! Disarm the charge!"
Marcus sprinted over, ripping the battery pack out.
The red blinking light went dark.
I didn't wait for the scuffle to end.
I ran straight to my mother, falling to my knees.
"Mom! Mom, can you hear me?"
My mother groaned, her eyelids flickering open.
"Claire... oh, thank god..." she whispered.
I frantically worked at the heavy nylon ropes binding her wrists.
With Marcus's help, we freed her completely.
I pulled her into my arms, sobbing tears of pure relief.
Over my mother's shoulder, I watched Luca standing over his sister.
Rebecca was weeping uncontrollably now, her grand scheme in ruins.
"Take her away," Luca ordered quietly.
Two tactical guards hauled Rebecca to her feet.
She stared at her brother with pure hatred.
"You'll never be safe, Luca! The syndicate will finish what I started!"
"Let them try," Luca replied, his voice like jagged ice.
Marcus escorted her out of the silo.
Luca walked slowly over to where my mother and I sat.
He knelt down beside us.
"Is she alright?" he asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle.
"She's exhausted and dehydrated," I wiped my eyes.
"We need to get her to a real hospital immediately."
"My car is waiting outside," Luca said.
He carefully helped my mother to her feet, supporting her weight.
We walked out of the decaying grain elevator into the sunlight.

The nightmare was finally ending.
Or so we thought.
