Chapter 11 - What Dean Confessed

Dean Russo was arrested at a motel outside Albany. He agreed to cooperate after learning Vincent had planned to abandon him.
His statement confirmed that Vincent had arranged the threats against me, hoping fear would push me toward Adrian and make me a convenient witness to a staged attack. Dean had followed the orders willingly, believing he would gain control of the organization.
"I never intended to hurt Claire," he claimed.
I read the transcript and remembered his hand reaching for my face, the shattered bowl, and the nights I spent awake. Intentions did not erase actions.
Evelyn filed for divorce and began rebuilding her life with her son. I called her to thank her for warning me.
"You listened," she said. "That's what mattered."
The investigation expanded. Vincent's financial records tied him to the warehouse fire, the manipulation of Luca, and the death of Adrian's mother. The evidence was not yet enough for every charge, but the silence surrounding the Moretti family had broken.
Adrian stepped away from day-to-day leadership and appointed independent managers to wind down the businesses under legal supervision.
That evening he met me on the beach behind the estate.
"You are free to leave," he said. "You always were, but I want you to hear it from me."
"And if I stay?"
"Then it must be because you want to. Not because I rescued you."
I kissed him first. It was gentle, uncertain, and more honest than any grand promise.

When we separated, his phone buzzed. Luca had been summoned to testify against Vincent.
And Luca was missing.
