Chapter 8 - The Attorney in the Mirror

Vincent Hale had served the Morettis for twenty years. He wore immaculate suits and spoke as though every sentence had been reviewed by a judge.
When Adrian showed him the receipt, Vincent barely blinked. "Someone is framing me."
"Then help us find out who," Adrian said.
Vincent agreed to turn over his office records, but by evening his files had been wiped and his assistant had vanished.
I searched my father's old records again. On one ledger page, he had circled the initials V.H. beside a series of missing payments. My stomach sank.
Adrian's mother had died after a suspicious fall on the estate stairs. Vincent had handled the insurance claim. The same firm had handled the warehouse fire.
"He controlled the paperwork," I whispered. "Every time someone disappeared, he controlled the story."
Luca burst into the room. "You can't believe Vincent did this. He practically raised us."
Adrian turned the ledger toward him. "Then explain it."
Luca stared at the page. His face changed. "I gave Vincent my cuff links to repair last month," he said. "He never returned one."
For the first time, Luca sounded frightened rather than offended.
The brothers argued late into the night. Eventually Luca admitted Vincent had encouraged him to resent Adrian, feeding him selective documents that made Adrian appear responsible for their mother's death.
"I wanted to believe him," Luca said. "Because it was easier than admitting I didn't know what happened."

A phone rang in the silent room. It was Vincent.
"Cancel the gala," he told Adrian, "and the truth about your mother dies with me."
