Chapter 1 - Three Knocks After Midnight

“Please don’t fire my mama.”

The little girl begging me was doing her sick mother’s work after midnight.

Mia was six.

A sleeping baby rested against her back in a faded blue shawl.

Her mother had worked in my house for eight years.

I realized I knew almost nothing about her life.

Then Mia asked me a question that changed the night.

“Why does someone knock behind that wall every night?”

She pointed at the library bookcase.

“Sometimes it’s scratching. Sometimes three knocks.”

Her mother thought she was imagining it.

I would have thought the same.

Then Mia raised a finger.

“Wait. Listen.”

We stood still.
