Chapter 1 - THE FORK THAT STOPPED THE WEDDING

THE MAFIA BOSS WATCHED ME SNATCH A FORK FROM HIS NINE-YEAR-OLD SON JUST BEFORE HE TOOK A BITE OF HIS ENGAGEMENT CAKE—THEN HIS FIANCÉE SAID, “SHE'S JUST TRYING TO GET ATTENTION,” BEFORE HE EVEN ASKED WHY I WAS TREMBLING OR WHY THE LITTLE BOY WAS WHISPERING, “BUT VANESSA SAID IT WAS SAFE.” ""Give him back his fork, Nora."" Vanessa Bellini's voice cut across the dining table. I stood beside nine-year-old Ethan Moretti, holding his silver dessert fork so tightly my knuckles had turned white. A slice of chocolate cake sat in front of him. The frosting was beautiful. Glossy. Perfectly smooth. But just beneath the edge of that frosting, I could see something that made my stomach drop. A small piece of pecan. Ethan had a severe tree-nut allergy. And he'd been less than an inch from putting that cake into his mouth. ""Please, Miss Vanessa,"" I whispered. ""He can't eat this."" Vanessa slowly lowered her champagne glass. Her fitted red silk gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers. Twenty-eight wealthy guests were watching. ""Oh, for heaven's sake. It's cake, Nora."" Ethan looked up at me. His little face was confused. ""But she told me it was the special one."" My throat tightened. ""Sweetheart, don't touch it."" Vanessa gave an irritated laugh. ""You're frightening him."" I carefully moved the plate away. Vanessa's expression hardened. ""Put that back."" ""I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't."" Her smile disappeared. ""Nora, you're a housemaid. You're not his mother."" I swallowed. ""No, ma'am."" ""Then stop acting like you know what's best for him."" Ethan reached for my sleeve. ""Miss Nora?"" ""Yes, honey?"" ""Am I in trouble?"" Something inside me broke. ""No, sweetheart."" Before I could say anything else, a man's voice interrupted us. ""Vanessa."" Luca Moretti had risen from the head of the table. Thirty-five. Dark hair. Tailored black suit. A man who rarely raised his voice because everyone around him had learned to listen the first time. He wasn't looking at the beautiful cake. He was looking at his son's frightened face. ""Ethan?"" The little boy immediately straightened. ""Yes, Daddy?"" ""What's happening?"" Before I could answer, Vanessa smiled. ""Oh, darling, don't make a fuss. Nora's trying to get attention by taking Ethan's dessert away. She's convinced herself the caterers made some terrible mistake."" My heart nearly stopped. Because Vanessa had just called it a mistake. And Luca hadn't even asked what was wrong with the cake. My name is Nora Bennett. I was twenty-six years old, had worked at the Moretti estate for fourteen months, and had spent the last ten minutes trying to prevent something that could have sent a little boy straight to the emergency room. Normally, I stayed invisible. I cleaned bedrooms. Pressed linens. Served dinner. And sent almost half my paycheck home to help my mother, whose medical bills had been piling up since her second surgery. Her rent was due Monday. Missing another paycheck wasn't an option. And Vanessa knew it. She'd reminded me that afternoon. ""If you interfere with dinner service again, Nora, don't expect to work here after Saturday."" So I'd kept quiet. Until I saw the pecan. Ethan had been diagnosed with his allergy when he was four. Luca kept his prescribed emergency medication available, and everyone responsible for Ethan's meals knew how seriously the family took avoiding tree nuts. The kitchen kept his food separate. The head housekeeper checked his desserts. And Ethan had learned to ask whether something was safe before eating it. He was a careful little boy. Sometimes too careful. He'd refused birthday cake at school more times than I could count. And on the rare occasions when someone made him something special, his whole face lit up. Tonight, Vanessa had promised him his very own slice of engagement cake. She'd even knelt beside him before dinner. ""Don't worry, sweetheart. I checked everything."" Ethan had smiled. ""Really?"" ""Really."" He'd spent the next hour looking forward to dessert. Now Luca was standing beside us. ""Nora."" My stomach tightened. ""Yes, Mr. Moretti?"" ""Why did you take Ethan's fork?"" I swallowed. ""There's something in his cake, sir."" Vanessa immediately interrupted. ""Chocolate. Frosting. The same ingredients everyone else is eating."" Luca slowly turned toward her. ""That's not what Nora said."" Vanessa smiled tightly. ""She's overreacting."" He looked back at me. ""What did you find?"" My voice trembled. ""Pecans, sir."" The expression on Luca's face changed. He looked down at the dessert. Then carefully moved the plate farther from his son. ""Ethan, have you eaten any?"" The little boy shook his head. ""No, Daddy."" ""Good."" Luca gently touched his shoulder. ""Don't eat anything from that plate."" Ethan nodded. Then whispered, ""I'm sorry."" His father frowned. ""For what?"" ""For making everyone stop."" Luca studied his face. ""Who told you this was your fault?"" Ethan glanced toward Vanessa. She immediately laughed. ""Oh, Luca. Nobody's blaming him."" Luca turned toward her. ""Then why is he apologizing?"" She hesitated. ""He's embarrassed."" Luca looked back at his son. ""Sweetheart, did you ask whether the cake was safe?"" Ethan nodded. ""Yes."" ""Who did you ask?"" The boy pointed toward Vanessa. The room became quiet. Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée. ""Did Ethan ask you?"" Vanessa nodded. ""Of course."" ""And what did you tell him?"" ""That the caterers had prepared something suitable."" Luca glanced toward the plate. ""Did you check?"" Her smile tightened. ""Yes."" ""With whom?"" ""The catering staff."" ""Who specifically?"" Vanessa hesitated. ""I don't remember."" Luca looked at me. ""Nora, did the kitchen prepare a separate dessert for Ethan?"" I nodded. ""Yes, sir."" ""What was it?"" ""A small vanilla cake with blue frosting."" Ethan looked up. ""The one with the little stars?"" I nodded. ""That's right, honey."" His eyes filled. ""Where did it go?"" I couldn't answer. Because I knew exactly where it had gone. I'd seen Vanessa carry it away before dessert was served. Luca noticed my expression. ""Nora?"" My mouth went dry. Vanessa was staring at me. The warning in her eyes was unmistakable. I thought about my mother's medical bills. The overdue rent. And how difficult it would be to find another job before winter. Then I looked at Ethan. He was sitting with his hands folded in his lap. Afraid to touch anything. ""I don't know, sir."" The lie tasted awful. Luca studied my face. Then quietly asked, ""Are you afraid of losing your job?"" My eyes immediately filled. ""Yes, sir."" ""You won't."" Vanessa pushed back her chair. ""For heaven's sake, Luca. You're turning one little catering mistake into a public interrogation."" He slowly looked toward her. ""One little mistake?"" ""Yes."" ""My son has a severe allergy."" ""I know."" ""Then why did you give him cake without knowing what was in it?"" Vanessa's smile disappeared. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Luca turned toward Ethan. ""Buddy, did Vanessa bring you this slice herself?"" The little boy nodded. ""Yes."" Luca looked back at his fiancée. ""You told me the caterers served it."" Vanessa hesitated. ""They did."" ""Then why did you carry it to his chair?"" Her fingers tightened around her champagne glass. ""I was being helpful."" Luca glanced at the empty dessert place beside Ethan. Then toward the serving cart. ""Where is his vanilla cake?"" Vanessa looked away. ""I don't know."" He waited. ""Vanessa."" Her voice sharpened. ""Perhaps someone took it back to the kitchen."" Luca turned toward me. ""Nora?"" My throat closed. I could barely speak. ""Miss Bellini asked me not to serve it."" The silence was immediate. Vanessa stood. ""That is absolutely not what happened."" Luca didn't look at her. ""What did she tell you?"" I swallowed. ""She said Ethan should have the same cake as the other guests."" ""And you explained his allergy?"" ""Yes, sir."" Vanessa interrupted. ""I said we shouldn't make him feel different from everyone else."" Luca slowly turned. ""You wanted him to feel included?"" ""Exactly."" He pointed toward the cake. ""By giving him something he cannot safely eat?"" Vanessa didn't answer. One of the guests quietly put down her fork. Another looked toward Ethan. The little boy was staring at his plate. His shoulders had begun to shake. Luca noticed. He crouched beside him. ""Hey, buddy."" Ethan looked up. ""Yes, Daddy?"" ""You did exactly the right thing by asking whether the cake was safe."" His eyes filled. ""But Vanessa said I ask too many questions."" Luca went still. ""What?"" The boy swallowed. ""She said people get tired of hearing about my allergy."" Vanessa immediately sighed. ""Oh, Ethan. I said you don't need to announce it every time someone offers you food."" Luca slowly looked toward her. ""He absolutely does need to ask about his food."" Vanessa folded her arms. ""Luca, he's nine. You can't protect him from everything forever."" His voice remained quiet. ""No."" She seemed relieved. Then he continued. ""But I can teach him that adults who care about him don't make him ashamed of protecting himself."" Nobody spoke. Ethan's face crumpled. ""Even at your wedding?"" Luca turned back. ""Especially at my wedding."" The boy wiped his cheeks. ""Vanessa said I wasn't allowed to ask about the food there."" Luca's expression changed. ""Why?"" Ethan stared at his shoes. ""Because important people would be eating."" The silence became unbearable. Luca slowly stood. He looked toward his fiancée. ""You told my son he couldn't ask whether the food at our wedding was safe?"" Vanessa sighed. ""I told him the caterers would handle it."" ""Then why did you give him a cake they hadn't cleared for him?"" She couldn't answer. Luca turned toward the head housekeeper. ""Mrs. Carter, please have the kitchen bring Ethan his prepared dessert."" ""Of course, sir."" He looked toward me. ""Nora."" ""Yes, sir?"" ""Thank you for stopping him."" My eyes filled. ""Of course, Mr. Moretti."" ""And you're not losing your job."" ""Thank you."" He glanced toward Vanessa. ""Not because you protected my son."" Vanessa gave a bitter laugh. ""Wonderful. Now a housemaid gets to decide what happens at our wedding."" Luca looked directly at her. ""No."" Her expression softened. Then he continued. ""My son's safety isn't a wedding detail you get to overrule."" Vanessa's smile vanished. I thought the worst was over. I thought Ethan could finally enjoy dessert beside his father. But when Mrs. Carter returned with his little vanilla cake, she looked troubled. The blue frosting was still perfect. Three tiny white stars sat across the top. And beside the plate, she carried a small silver cake server. ""Mr. Moretti?"" Luca looked up. ""Yes?"" ""May I ask Miss Bellini something?"" Vanessa went very still. Luca nodded. ""Of course."" Mrs. Carter turned toward her. ""Why did you send Ethan's cake back after I'd already checked it?"" Vanessa looked away. ""I wanted him to have the chocolate."" Mrs. Carter frowned. ""But I told you it contained pecans."" The entire table fell silent. Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée. ""You knew?"" Vanessa's fingers tightened around her glass. ""Mrs. Carter, that's not exactly what you said."" The older housekeeper shook her head. ""It is, ma'am."" She swallowed. ""I told you the chocolate cake wasn't safe for Ethan. You told me to bring the vanilla instead."" Luca stared at Vanessa. ""And?"" Mrs. Carter's voice trembled. ""She took the vanilla cake from me."" Nobody moved. ""Then she told the dessert server to put chocolate in front of Ethan anyway."" Ethan lowered his head. Luca's expression hardened. ""Vanessa."" She looked up. ""Yes?"" ""Why?"" Her eyes filled. ""I thought he'd be happier eating what everyone else was having."" Luca stared at her. ""You knew it contained something he was allergic to."" Vanessa began crying. ""I wasn't going to let him eat it."" He didn't move. ""Then why did you put it in front of him?"" She couldn't answer. For several seconds, the only sound was Ethan quietly crying beside his father. Then Luca looked at the little boy. ""Buddy, did Vanessa tell you not to touch the cake?"" Ethan shook his head. ""No."" ""What did she say?"" His voice trembled. ""She told me to go ahead."" Luca went completely still. Ethan continued. ""She said if I wanted to be part of the family, I had to stop asking for special things."" Vanessa covered her face. The silence was absolute. Luca knelt beside his son. ""Listen to me, Ethan."" The little boy looked up. ""You don't have to risk getting sick to belong at my table."" His face crumpled. ""Really?"" ""Really."" Luca pulled him into his arms. And for several seconds, the most powerful man in Chicago simply held his nine-year-old son while twenty-eight guests sat motionless. When Ethan finally looked up, his father smiled gently. ""How about we have your special cake now?"" Ethan nodded. But he didn't reach for his fork. Instead, he looked toward Vanessa. And whispered something that made my stomach tighten. ""Am I still allowed to come on Saturday?"" Luca frowned. ""Saturday?"" ""The wedding."" His father's expression softened. ""Of course."" Ethan swallowed. ""Even if I can't eat the cake?"" Luca stared at him. ""Why wouldn't you come?"" The boy looked toward Vanessa. His voice was barely audible. ""Because she said everybody would be happier if I stayed home."" The dining room went quiet. Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée. ""What?"" Vanessa immediately reached for her champagne glass. ""I suggested Ethan might be more comfortable spending the day with his mother."" Luca stared at her. ""He's my ring bearer."" ""I know."" ""He helped choose the rings."" ""Yes."" ""He practiced walking down the aisle with me last Sunday."" Vanessa looked away. ""And you told him he wasn't coming?"" She swallowed. ""I said we needed to think about his health."" Luca glanced toward the untouched chocolate cake. Then back at her. ""His health?"" Vanessa said nothing. Ethan pulled on his father's sleeve. ""Daddy?"" Luca turned immediately. ""Yes, buddy?"" ""Vanessa said if I got sick tonight, you might understand."" The entire table became still. Luca stared at him. ""Understand what?"" The boy's eyes filled. ""Why I shouldn't come to the wedding."" For several seconds, Luca couldn't speak. Then he slowly stood. He looked toward Vanessa. And asked one question. ""Was that why you wanted him to eat the chocolate cake?"" Vanessa began shaking her head. ""No, Luca. I never wanted him to get sick."" ""Then why did you tell him getting sick might change my mind?"" She couldn't answer. Luca looked toward Mrs. Carter. ""Who is handling the wedding desserts?"" The older housekeeper hesitated. ""The same catering company, sir."" He turned toward Vanessa. ""Did you review Ethan's dietary requirements with them?"" She nodded. ""Yes."" Mrs. Carter looked confused. Then quietly said, ""Miss Bellini?"" Vanessa closed her eyes. The older woman continued. ""That's not what the caterer told me."" Luca turned. ""What did they tell you?"" Mrs. Carter swallowed. ""That Miss Bellini had canceled Ethan's separate wedding meal."" The room fell silent. Luca stared at his fiancée. ""Canceled it?"" Vanessa whispered, ""I thought he wouldn't be attending."" He didn't move. ""Since when?"" She looked down. Mrs. Carter answered quietly. ""Since last Monday."" Luca went completely still. ""Five days ago?"" She nodded. Vanessa had made the decision before Ethan's cake was served. Before dinner. Before anyone could claim his allergy had become a problem. Luca slowly looked toward his fiancée. ""You planned to exclude my son from our wedding, then tried to make tonight look like the reason."" Vanessa began crying. ""I was trying to make everything easier."" ""For whom?"" She couldn't answer. Then Ethan reached for my hand. ""Miss Nora?"" I crouched beside him. ""Yes, sweetheart?"" ""Can I tell Daddy the other thing?"" My stomach tightened. ""What other thing, honey?"" He looked toward Vanessa. His eyes were wet. ""The thing she said about Mommy."" Luca turned immediately. ""What about your mother?"" Ethan swallowed. ""She told me Mommy agreed I shouldn't come."" Luca frowned. ""Your mother helped you choose your ring-bearer suit."" The little boy nodded. ""I know."" ""Then why would she say you shouldn't come?"" Ethan's voice broke. ""Vanessa said Mommy thought I was too much trouble."" Luca slowly looked toward his fiancée. ""Did you tell him that?"" Vanessa said nothing. Then a woman seated near the middle of the table quietly spoke. ""Mr. Moretti?"" Everyone turned. She wore a dark-green evening gown and had been introduced as a family friend helping Vanessa with the wedding arrangements. ""I'm the event coordinator,"" she said softly. Luca nodded. ""Yes, Mrs. Ellis?"" The woman swallowed. ""There's something you need to know."" Vanessa immediately stood. ""Don't."" But Mrs. Ellis continued. ""Miss Bellini asked me to arrange a separate room for Ethan at the wedding."" Luca stared at her. ""Why?"" ""She said he wouldn't be joining the ceremony or reception."" Ethan began crying again. Luca pulled him close. Then turned back toward the coordinator. ""Did she tell you I approved that?"" Mrs. Ellis nodded. ""Yes."" Vanessa covered her face. Luca's voice became very quiet. ""And what did you arrange?"" The woman hesitated. ""A small room behind the banquet hall. A television. Children's meals. Someone to supervise him."" The silence was unbearable. Luca looked toward Ethan. His son was clutching the little vanilla cake he'd barely tasted. Then Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée. ""You arranged for my nine-year-old son to sit alone behind our wedding reception while strangers celebrated our new family?"" Vanessa began sobbing. ""Luca, please. I didn't want him to feel left out."" He stared at her. ""Then why did you leave him out?"" She couldn't answer. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Mrs. Ellis spoke again. ""Mr. Moretti, there's one more thing."" Luca turned. ""What?"" The coordinator looked toward Ethan. Her voice trembled. ""Miss Bellini told me your son wasn't allowed to come into the reception room, even if he asked for you."" Luca's expression changed. ""Why?"" Mrs. Ellis swallowed. ""Because she said you needed one evening when you wouldn't have to worry about him."" Ethan slowly lowered his head. Then whispered something so quietly I almost missed it. ""Daddy?"" Luca crouched beside him. ""Yes, buddy?"" The little boy looked toward Vanessa. Tears rolled down his cheeks. ""I tried to be good tonight."" Luca's eyes filled. ""I know you did."" Ethan swallowed. ""But she said if I made it through dinner without getting sick, she'd have to find another reason you wouldn't want me there."" Luca went completely still. Then he looked directly at the woman in red. ""Vanessa... what other reason were you planning to give me?""
