Chapter 11 - The Price of the Valenti Name

Dante watched Cameron's accusation in silence. He had lived for years under rumors that were partly true. Now the lie that hurt him most was being delivered by a man who understood how to make cruelty sound respectable.

"He wants you to retaliate," I said.

"I know."

"Then don't give him what he wants."

Dante called Elena. Within hours, she submitted the authenticated recording implicating Salvatore and Sloane, along with independent forensic evidence. Dante also gave investigators financial records from his own companies.

"Some of those records could put you in prison," I said.

"They should be examined anyway."

I was proud of his choice, but pride wasn't the same as certainty. I told him I couldn't build a life with someone who expected me to overlook harm because he loved me.

"I wouldn't ask you to," he said.

We went to see my father at the hospital. He looked smaller than I remembered. His hair was white, his hands thin, but when he saw me, his face broke into the same crooked smile I'd carried in my memory.

"Redbird," he whispered.

I had forgotten the nickname. Hearing it nearly brought me to my knees.

"Dad."

He held me for a long time. Then he held Amelia. Evelyn stood nearby, crying quietly. We weren't suddenly a healed family. We were four people standing among the ruins of years stolen from us.

Daniel told Brooks he'd been forced to sign false statements blaming Dante's family for financial crimes. He had refused to name Salvatore as Luca's killer without corroboration, fearing the consequences for his daughters.

"I kept thinking I could outlast them," he said. "I didn't know how much life I was missing."

I sat beside him until evening. We talked about small things: my job, the lake, the pancakes he used to burn. It felt strange that ordinary conversation could be more painful than the revelations.

Meanwhile, prosecutors moved to freeze several Hale-linked accounts. Senator Hale announced he was taking temporary leave. Cameron disappeared from public view.

At Saint, Isabella showed me the rebuilt security protocols. The club was cooperating with investigators, and its management would operate independently of Dante's former network.

"He's changing more than his business," she said.

"I know."

"That doesn't mean you have to choose him."

I smiled. "I know that too."

That evening, Dante invited me to the roof of the Meridian. The city glittered beneath a clear autumn sky. He handed me a small velvet box.

I stiffened. "Dante—"

"Open it."

Inside was a repaired silver chain for my bird necklace. Nothing else. No ring. No promise he expected me to make.

"Your old clasp was broken," he said. "Isabella found someone who could fix it."

I laughed through sudden tears. "You scared me."

"I noticed."

I stepped closer. "I don't know what happens to us."

"Neither do I."

"I need time."

"Take it."

I kissed him under the city lights, not because he'd saved me, but because he'd finally understood he couldn't own the ending.

Below us, a black sedan slowed outside the hotel.

Its passenger window rolled down.

Cameron was inside.
