Chapter 7 - The House Without Windows

Morning House stood beyond a line of bare trees, its stone walls glowing beneath security lights. From the road, it looked like an expensive country inn. The fences told another story.
Elena had contacted a trusted federal investigator, Agent Maya Brooks, who had been quietly reviewing the Hale Foundation's finances. We gave her the video, the nurse's statement, and the address. She secured a search warrant before dawn.
"I want to go inside," I said.
"You can wait at the command post," Brooks replied. "We won't risk a hostage because you want to be brave."
I wanted to argue. Then I remembered what it felt like to have choices taken from me. Lily deserved to be found by people who knew how to protect her, not by a frightened sister trying to prove something.
I waited beside Dante in a cold van while officers approached the house. He brought me coffee without asking how I liked it. Black, with two sugars. He'd noticed.
"You don't have to pretend you're calm," he said.
"Neither do you."
He looked at the house. "My brother was twenty-one. He wanted to leave the family business and open a restaurant. The night he died, we'd argued. I told him he was weak."
I turned toward him.
"Those were my last words to him."
"You didn't know."
"That doesn't make them easier to remember."
I reached for his hand. He held mine as if it were something precious and breakable, though neither of us believed I was breakable anymore.
The radio crackled. Officers had entered. The ground floor was empty. The second floor held locked bedrooms and medical equipment. Then a shout: "Female located. Conscious."
I stood so quickly I hit my head on the van roof.
Minutes later, a young woman emerged wrapped in a gray blanket. Her dark hair was shorter than in the video. She searched the line of vehicles, and when she saw me, she stopped.
"Nora?"
I ran.
We collided in the muddy driveway, crying and laughing, holding each other like children who'd finally found their way home.
"You remembered the code," she whispered.
"Of course I remembered."
Her hands trembled against my back. "They told me you didn't want me."
"They lied."
"I know that now."
At the hospital, Amelia told Agent Brooks that she'd been moved between properties for years. Sloane wanted information from our father; Cameron used her existence to keep our mother obedient. She had escaped once and been recaptured.
"Mom tried to help me," Amelia said. "She said she had a plan."
"Where is she now?"
Amelia's face changed. "I heard them say she was going to testify. Then Salvatore came."
Dante went rigid.
"He said the Valenti family would take care of her," Amelia whispered.
Dante left the room without a word. I followed him into the hallway.
"Don't go after him alone," I said.
"He murdered my brother."
"And he wants you angry enough to make a mistake."
Dante looked at me for a long moment. Then he called Elena instead of reaching for a gun.
That choice saved us.

Because twenty minutes later, Brooks received a message from Salvatore offering to trade Evelyn Bennett for Dante Valenti.
The exchange was set for midnight.
