Chapter 12 - A Cold Cell, a Hidden Wire, and a Desperate Gamble

================================================================================

The blade pressed into my flesh, sharp enough that a single drop of blood trickled down my neck, soaking into the wool collar of my sweater.

"Set up the tripod, Carlo," Dominic ordered, not taking his eyes off mine. "Get the satellite uplink hot. Route the signal through the encrypted burner node. I want Luca to see every single detail of her face."

Carlo stepped forward with a heavy tactical tripod and an encrypted digital camcorder, positioning the lens three feet from where I knelt on the concrete.

Vanessa stood beside the glowing induction furnace, the intense heat radiating from the coils making the air shimmer around her. The temperature inside the crucible was climbing rapidly toward nine hundred degrees. She held the *Moretti Star* suspended over the opening with a pair of long titanium tongs, her eyes wide with twisted anticipation.

"Three minutes to broadcast," Carlo reported, his fingers tapping on a military-grade tablet. "Satellite link established. Pinging Luca Moretti’s encrypted handset now."

My mind raced through the dark.

I was bound, unarmed, surrounded by eight hardened mercenaries, a traitorous mob lieutenant, and a psychopathic heiress. If I refused to speak, Dominic would slit my throat on camera. If I read the false confession, they would execute me the second the stream ended, burn the diamond, and leave my body in a freight sump.

There was only one way out. I had to use the one weapon they didn't know I had.

When Luca had given me the diamond back in the bunker of Safehouse Delta, he had placed the stone into my hands and closed my fingers over it. But right before Vanessa’s flashbangs had detonated through the ceiling, when I had realized we were about to be breached, my housemaid's instincts had kicked in.

Housekeepers in high-end estates carry a master key ring on a heavy brass clip. Along with the keys, my daily uniform belt held a small, flat, stainless-steel pocket tool: an antique jeweler’s folding loupe and diamond-testing probe that had belonged to my mother. When Vanessa’s men had dragged me from the bunker, they had stripped my trench coat and checked my waist for firearms, but they hadn't searched the inner lining of my heavy wool trousers.

The steel testing probe was currently pressed against the small of my back, trapped beneath the tight loop of the zip-ties binding my wrists.

Slowly, imperceptibly, while Dominic was watching Carlo adjust the camera focus, I twisted my bound wrists.

The edge of the stainless-steel folding casing was sharp. If I could wedge the hardened steel hinge against the serrated plastic teeth of the heavy zip-tie, the tension might shear the nylon loop.

*Twist. Scrape.*

Pain lanced through my wrists as the sharp plastic dug into my flesh, but I didn't make a sound. I kept my breathing steady, fixing my eyes on Vanessa.

"Vanessa," I spoke up, my voice sounding deliberately weak, trembling with manufactured terror. "Wait... please."

Vanessa paused, the tongs hovering an inch above the cherry-red mouth of the furnace. She turned her head, a smirk of absolute triumph spreading across her painted lips.

"Are you ready to beg, little maid?" she mocked.

"If you burn that stone..." I stammered, letting my voice crack, "you're destroying the only leverage that can keep you alive."

Dominic scoffed, resting his hands on his hips. "We don't need leverage. We have the Rossi family army behind us."

"The Rossis don't care about you, Dominic!" I cried out, projecting my voice toward the open microphone on Carlo's camera tripod. "Look at the contract codes on the USB drives! The Rossis promised forty-five million in escrow, but that escrow is held under a unilateral cancellation clause! If the *Moretti Star* is destroyed, the escrow automatically voids, and all assets revert directly to Arthur Pendelton!"

Dominic’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. He glanced sideways toward Carlo, then back at me. "You're lying. You don't know the terms of that contract."

"I read the terminal screen at Safehouse Delta!" I insisted, twisting the steel probe violently against the nylon band behind my back.

*Snap.*

A microscopic click vibrated through the plastic. One of the zip-tie's internal locking teeth gave way. The loop loosened by a quarter of an inch.

"The escrow contract is indexed to the physical survival of the diamond," I continued, speaking rapidly to keep their attention glued to my face. "Don Salvatore Rossi isn't buying Chicago with bearer bonds. He’s using you to execute his dirty work, and the second you vaporize that stone, you become an expendable loose end! Why do you think Arthur Pendelton sent eight of his own private hitmen to watch you?"

The eight mercenaries around the perimeter shifted uncomfortably, their eyes darting between Dominic and the camera technician. The tension in the cavernous freight terminal tightened like a coiled spring.

"Shut up!" Vanessa screamed, her composure cracking. "She’s trying to stall, Dominic! Don't listen to her! Burn the damn rock!"

"Uplink connected!" Carlo announced loudly. "We’re live. Luca Moretti has accepted the video feed."

Dominic stepped beside the camera, pulling his pistol and pointing it directly between my eyes.

"Read the script, Emma," Dominic commanded, his voice trembling with a dangerous, unstable rage. "Tell Luca you betrayed him. Tell him you sold the Moretti family out. Say it into the lens, or I swear to God I’ll blow your kneecaps off right now."

The small red light atop the camera pulsed solid crimson.

On the tablet screen mounted beside the lens, a live video window flickered to life.

There was Luca.

He was standing inside the rusted interior of Grain Terminal Four at Navy Pier, his charcoal suit smeared with soot, his hair disheveled, his eyes burning with an unholy, volcanic fury that almost cracked the digital display. Marco stood behind him, along with a dozen heavily armed Moretti enforcers, their rifles raised.

Luca looked directly through the camera lens. The moment his slate-grey eyes locked onto my bruised face, his jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would shatter.

"Dominic," Luca’s voice came through the tablet's speaker, low, quiet, and chilling enough to freeze the blood in a man's veins. "If you harm one hair on her head, I will hunt you to the ends of this earth. I will skin you alive in front of the entire Commission."

"Save the poetry, cousin!" Dominic barked into the camera, stepping closer to me and grabbing my hair, forcing my face toward the lens. "Your little pet has something she wants to confess to you. Go ahead, Emma. Tell him whose side you were on."

I looked directly into the camera. I looked straight into Luca’s eyes.

Behind my back, my fingers gripped the stainless-steel probe. With a violent, desperate wrench of my arms, I drove the metal edge through the weakened nylon.

*SNAP!*

The zip-tie severed completely. My hands were free.

But I didn't reach for a gun. I didn't jump Dominic.

I looked at Luca, and instead of reading the false confession, I screamed at the top of my lungs:

"LUCA! SUB-LEVEL FOUR BENEATH THE MERCHANDISE MART! FREIGHT SPUR SEVEN! THE FURNACE IS DRAWING THREE-PHASE HIGH VOLTAGE ON THE AUXILIARY MUNICIPAL SUBSTATION GRID!"

Dominic roared in fury, raising the butt of his pistol to smash it across my skull.

"YOU BITCH!"

In that split second, I didn't cower. I rolled forward off my knees, driving my shoulder straight into the legs of the heavy aluminum camera tripod.

The heavy equipment crashed into Dominic’s shins, knocking him off balance. His pistol discharged with a deafening *BANG!*, the bullet ricocheting off the concrete ceiling.

Vanessa shrieked, startled by the gunshot, and stumbled backward toward the humming induction furnace.

The titanium tongs slipped from her manicured fingers.

The sixty-million-dollar *Moretti Star* diamond fell through the air, bouncing off the steel housing of the generator and rolling toward the dark, gaping opening of an abandoned industrial drainage shaft in the center of the terminal floor!

"The diamond!" Vanessa screamed hysterically, lunging across the floor on her hands and knees.

At that exact second, from the high, vaulted steel girders fifty feet above the freight terminal, a deafening explosion shattered the concrete ceiling.

*KABOOM!*

The entire subterranean chamber shook violently as four high-velocity tactical breaching charges blew the roof inward.

Chunks of reinforced concrete and twisted rebar rained down into the room. Through the swirling cloud of dust and fire, black-clad assault figures dropped on high-speed rappelling cables, their weapons spitting suppressed, lethal fury before their boots even touched the floor.

Luca hadn't waited for my broadcast to trace the location.

He had known the moment the induction furnace had drawn power from the city grid.

And now, the Devil of Chicago had arrived to collect his debts.
