Chapter 7 - A Maid’s Intuition Against a Syndicate Conspiracy

================================================================================

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in cold shades of bruised purple and slate grey.

The Moretti estate was crawling with armed men. Broken glass had been swept from the grand hallway, the damaged mahogany bookshelves in Luca’s third-floor study were covered with protective tarps, and the air still carried the faint, sharp tang of cordite and ozone.

I sat on a massive emerald-velvet sofa in Luca’s private sitting room on the fourth floor—a suite of rooms I had never once entered during my eleven months as a housekeeper. This was the inner sanctum, where Luca slept, planned, and lived away from the prying eyes of his household staff.

A warm, heavy cashmere blanket was wrapped around my shoulders. On the marble coffee table before me sat a steaming porcelain cup of Earl Grey tea, alongside the recovered, intact *Moretti Star* diamond, which now rested securely inside its original titanium transport case.

The door clicked open, and Luca walked in.

He had showered and changed into fresh clothes: dark charcoal trousers and a crisp, unbuttoned black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the intricate tribal and family crest tattoos etched into his skin. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his grey eyes deeper than before, but the dangerous, predatory vitality in his posture hadn't diminished in the slightest.

He carried a thick manila folder under his arm.

He walked over, sat down in the leather armchair directly across from me, and leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees.

"Drink your tea, Emma," he said gently. "It will help with the shock."

I nodded, picking up the hot cup with both hands, allowing the heat to seep back into my chilled fingers. "I’m fine, Mr. Moretti. Truly."

"Stop calling me Mr. Moretti," he murmured, his gaze holding mine with magnetic intensity. "A woman who just saved my family’s empire, exposed my traitorous lieutenant, and wrecked a six-ton armored truck to protect my father’s legacy doesn't call me 'Mr. Moretti.' My name is Luca."

A blush crept up my neck, hot and sudden. "Luca," I whispered. The name felt strange on my tongue—intimate, dangerous, and intoxicating.

Luca opened the manila folder on the table and slid three glossy black-and-white photographs toward me.

"I need your eyes again, Emma," he said, tapping the first photograph. "This is Jonathan Barlowe’s private workshop at his Michigan Avenue boutique. We raided it an hour ago while he was singing like a canary in our basement."

I set my teacup down and picked up the photograph.

It showed an immaculate, high-tech jewelry workbench: rows of laser micrometers, diamond balances, and polarized light filters. But what caught my eye immediately was a large, wall-mounted corkboard in the background, pinned with hundreds of diamond grading certificates and structural blueprints.

"What am I looking for?" I asked, studying the details with practiced precision.

"Barlowe confessed that Dominic didn't just approach him last week," Luca explained, his voice low and dangerous. "Dominic has been planning this extraction for eight months. But Barlowe claims he was receiving direct instructions—and the synthetic CVD diamond blank—from an external broker known only as 'The Alchemist.' Barlowe doesn't know who The Alchemist is. He only received shipments via dead-drops in the Diamond District."

I pulled the second photograph closer. It was a close-up of the corkboard, focusing on a hand-drawn diagram of a rough diamond crystal.

Beneath the diagram, someone had written a series of mathematical equations in green ink:

$$ \lambda = \frac{n \cdot d}{\sin(\theta)} $$

$$ \rho_{pt} = 21.45 \, \text{g/cm}^3 $$

$$ \Delta V = V_0 (1 + 3\alpha \Delta T) $$

Beneath the thermal expansion equations were three handwritten lines:

*Refractive Index Target: 2.417*

*Nitrogen Aggregation: Type IIa Pure*

*Laser Cleavage Vector: 111 Octahedral Plane*

My heart skipped a beat.

"Luca," I breathed, my fingers tracing the green ink in the photo. "Look at the handwriting. Look at the way the letter 'g' in the density equation loops backward."

Luca leaned closer, his shoulder brushing against mine as he examined the photo. The faint scent of clean cedar and masculine soap radiated from him. "What about it?"

"My mother worked for Arthur Kaufman for twenty-three years," I said, my voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "Kaufman had three master appraisers on staff. Two of them were old-school European craftsmen who wrote in copperplate cursive. But the third... the third was a rogue metallurgist named Victor Vance."

Luca’s eyes sharpened instantly. "Vance? As in *Vance & Sons Collateral Loans* on South State Street?"

"Yes!" I said, my excitement mounting as the puzzle pieces snapped into alignment. "Victor Vance was Arthur Kaufman’s chief gemological chemist in the late nineties. He was fired in 2002 after Kaufman discovered he was using the store's chemical vapor deposition reactors to manufacture counterfeit emeralds and synthetic industrial diamonds! He opened that pawn shop on South State Street as a front to wash illicit stones!"

Luca stared at the photo, then back at me, his gaze blazing with newfound realization.

"The blue pawn ticket," Luca muttered. "The pawn ticket in Vanessa’s clutch wasn't an ordinary receipt. Vanessa didn't just pick a random pawn shop out of the phone book."

"No," I insisted. "Victor Vance *is* 'The Alchemist.' He manufactured the six-carat CVD replica diamond in his basement lab. He etched the false GIA inscription using his old Kaufman acid bath formulas. And he is the one who brokered the deal between Dominic and the Rossi family!"

Luca stood up in a single, fluid motion. The weariness on his face had vanished completely, replaced by an expression of pure, predatory focus. He reached for his shoulder holster, checking the magazine of his sidearm.

"Marco!" Luca barked toward the open doorway.

Marco appeared within seconds. "Yes, Boss?"

"Mobilize two tactical squads," Luca commanded. "Full armor, suppressed weapons. We are hitting Vance & Sons Collateral Loans on South State Street before the morning rush hour. I want Victor Vance taken alive. If he resists, take his hands off."

"Understood, Boss," Marco nodded, turning to leave.

"Wait," I called out, standing up from the sofa, the cashmere blanket falling to the floor.

Luca paused, turning his head to look at me with raised eyebrows. "Emma, you need to sleep. You've been awake for twenty-four hours, you survived a firefight, and you crashed an armored truck."

"If you kick in Victor Vance's front door with tactical squads and assault rifles, you will find nothing," I said firmly, walking toward him until I was standing barely a foot away.

Luca looked down at me, intrigued. "Why?"

"Because Victor Vance is a paranoid chemist," I explained, looking straight into his grey eyes. "When Arthur Kaufman called the police on him twenty years ago, Vance had an automated acid deluge system rigged above his laboratory safes. The second the sirens tripped his sensors, five gallons of concentrated hydrofluoric acid poured over the benches, dissolving every counterfeit stone, ledger, and piece of evidence into sludge within forty seconds. If your men breach that shop with guns blazing, Vance will hit the panic button, and the evidence connecting Dominic to the Rossi syndicate will be destroyed forever."

Luca folded his arms across his broad chest, a slow, deeply appreciative smile curving his lips.

"You continue to amaze me, Emma," he murmured, his voice rich and low. "So tell me, how do we get into Victor Vance's laboratory without tripping his alarms?"

I took a deep breath.

"We don't breach it with guns," I said softly. "We breach it with a customer. We walk in through the front door with the *Moretti Star*, and we offer him something a rogue chemist can't resist: a chance to buy the greatest diamond in Chicago history."
