Chapter 10 - The Syndicate Table TurnsBy late afternoon, news of the Bellini syndicate’s complete collapse sent seismic shockwaves through New York’s commercial and political sectors.

The front page of the New York Post blared:

BILLION-DOLLAR CARTEL CRUMBLES: MAFIA HEIRESS ARRESTED IN BROTHER-IN-LAW’S MURDER CONSPIRACY.

Inside the grand banquet hall of the Moretti estate, the tension of the previous night had evaporated, replaced by an atmosphere of profound renewal.

The long dining table, which had witnessed Vanessa’s cruelty less than twenty-four hours earlier, was now cleared of the ostentatious floral arrangements and cold crystal flutes.

Instead, the room was filled with simple, warm comfort: platters of homemade roast chicken, bowls of roasted root vegetables, warm crusty sourdough bread, and carafes of iced sweet tea.

Around the table sat those who truly mattered:

Rachel and Ben.

My sister Chloe, who was already sketching designs for the renovated Wisconsin diner in her notebook.

Antonio and Leo Falcone, who had shed their tactical gear for simple button-down shirts.

And at the head of the table sat Luca.

He stood up, tapping his water glass with a fork to draw our attention.

The room quieted immediately.

“Twenty-four hours ago,” Luca began, his gaze sweeping across our faces, “this room was filled with people who valued power over truth. People who were willing to look the other way while a grieving mother was humiliated, and while a loyal employee was punished for her honesty.”

He looked directly at me.

“Emma, please stand up.”

I hesitated, my cheeks flushing warm, but Chloe nudged my elbow with a beaming smile.

I rose to my feet.

Luca picked up a velvet box from the sideboard and walked over to me.

He opened the lid.

Inside rested a silver lapel pin shaped like an anchor—the historic symbol of the maritime union my father had belonged to, and the official emblem of the newly chartered Moretti Foundation.

“Emma,” Luca said, his voice resonant and steady. “The Moretti Foundation has established a ten-million-dollar endowment dedicated to protecting vulnerable families, funding community legal aid, and ensuring no worker is ever silenced by corrupt employers. I want you to serve as the executive director of that foundation.”

I stared at him, completely speechless.

“Luca… I… I was a housekeeper,” I stammered, tears pricking my eyes. “I don't have a background in corporate philanthropy.”

“You have something much more valuable,” Rachel said from across the table, her eyes shining with warmth. “You have a spine that doesn't bend. You protected my son when forty-eight billionaires looked down at their silverware. There is nobody on this earth I would trust more to run that foundation.”

Ben jumped out of his chair, ran over to me, and wrapped his arms around my waist.

“Say yes, Emma! Please say yes!”

Laughter rippled through the room.

I looked down at the boy, then at Chloe, who was nodding vigorously with tears in her eyes, and finally at Luca.

“Yes,” I whispered, a brilliant smile breaking across my face. “I would be honored.”

The room erupted into applause.

Luca pinned the silver anchor to my sweater, his fingers lingering gently against my shoulder for a brief, electric second.

“Welcome to the family, Emma,” he murmured.
