Chapter 7 - The Shadow Behind Vanessa“Chloe!”

The vault door clicked open, and I threw myself across the corridor, catching my sister in my arms before she could collapse.
Chloe buried her face into my neck, sobbing hysterically as her fingers clutched my torn work shirt.
“Emma… they had guns… they dragged me out the window…” Chloe choked out, her entire body shaking like a leaf.
“You’re safe now, Chlo. You’re safe,” I whispered over and over, kissing her temples, checking her wrists for cuts, checking her face.
Aside from bruised wrists where zip-ties had bound her, she was whole.
Luca stood above us, his dark eyes burning with an intense, quiet fury.
Behind him stood Rachel, carrying a battered leather briefcase retrieved from the bank vault.
“Salvatore Bellini is in custody,” Luca said, his voice flat and lethal. “Leo took him down at the St. Jude convent before he could reach his helicopter.”
Vanessa, huddled in the corner of her cell, looked up through the iron bars.
Her designer silk dress was ruined, covered in concrete dust and halon residue.
“Luca…” she whimpered, reaching out a trembling hand. “Please… they tried to kill me… my own father sent those men to kill me!”
Luca slowly walked over to her cell.
He didn't look angry anymore.
He looked completely detached, like an executioner reading a routine proclamation.
“Your father didn't send them to kill you because he hated you, Vanessa,” Luca said quietly. “He sent them because you failed.”
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the micro-SD card I had handed him through Antonio.
“Do you know what was inside Michael’s flight jacket collar?” Luca asked.
Vanessa swallowed hard, her eyes darting between the tiny memory chip and Luca’s frozen face.
“Michael… Michael was paranoid…”
“It’s the audio file from June 14th, five years ago,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. “The night my father died in that private hospital in White Plains.”
Rachel stepped forward, her eyes widening in horror.
“Luca… what are you saying?”
Luca turned to his sister-in-law.
“Our father didn't die of congestive heart failure, Rachel. He was administered a lethal dose of potassium chloride through his IV line. And the private duty nurse who signed off on the chart was paid two hundred thousand dollars through an offshore trust registered to Vanessa Bellini’s maiden name.”
Vanessa’s face went completely translucent.
Her knees gave out, and she hit the stone floor with a dull thud.
“I was nineteen…” Vanessa whispered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “My father told me it was just an inheritance settlement… he told me it was medicine to help him sleep!”
“You spent five years sleeping in my bed, planning our wedding, and playing the supportive bride,” Luca said, the sheer disgust in his tone making the cell feel ten degrees colder. “While all along, you were the instrument that put my father in the ground and paved the way for your family to siphon our empire.”
Vanessa looked up, grabbing the bars with both hands.
“Luca, I loved you! In the beginning, it was my father’s orders, but I fell in love with you! That's why I tried to stop Michael! I begged him to take the money and leave town! I didn't want him dead!”
“You let him drive onto that highway knowing his brakes had been cut,” Rachel shouted, her voice echoing violently down the stone corridor. “You looked me in the eye at his funeral, hugged my ten-year-old son, and told me you would always be there for us!”
Vanessa couldn't answer.
She lowered her head to the cold stones, sobbing uncontrollably.
Luca turned to Antonio.
“Call the federal prosecutor, Marcus Vance. The one who has been trying to bring down the Bellini cartel for the last ten years.”
Antonio blinked in surprise.
“The feds, boss? We don't go to the feds.”
“We do tonight,” Luca replied coldly. “The Moretti family is washing its hands of this filth. We hand over Salvatore, Gino, Vanessa, and every encrypted ledger from that vault. By sunrise, the Bellini name will cease to exist in this state.”

He turned toward me and Chloe.
“Come upstairs,” Luca said, his tone softening instantly as he addressed us. “The sun is coming up. It’s time to close this chapter.”
