Chapter 5 - The Door Beneath the Warehouse

I refused to wait in the car.

Anthony argued. Daniel argued. The police detective in charge, Mara Chen, told me entering a possible crime scene could endanger Noah.

She was right. I hated that she was right.

So I stayed behind the barricade while officers approached the abandoned cold-storage building on the waterfront.

Then Noah appeared at a second-floor window.

“Mom!”

I moved before I knew I was moving.

Detective Chen caught my arm. “Claire, let us get him.”

A shot rang out inside.

Anthony went white.

The next minutes were a blur of shouted orders, breaking glass, and sirens. Officers entered through the rear loading bay. Daniel, who knew the old building's layout, directed them toward a service stairwell.

Noah came out wrapped in a police blanket.

I fell to my knees and caught him.

He was shaking. I kissed his hair, his cheeks, his little hands.

“I'm here,” I whispered. “I'm right here.”

A woman had been arrested inside. She called herself Grace Holloway. She was carrying a prepaid phone, a counterfeit school identification card, and an envelope addressed to Samuel Price.

Grace told Detective Chen that she had been hired to retrieve a key, not hurt a child.

I didn't believe her innocence, but I believed her fear.

Noah told me she'd argued with a man on the phone.

“She said she wasn't doing another funeral,” he whispered.

Another funeral.

Anthony heard him.

The envelope contained a photograph of the silver key and instructions to deliver it to locker 317 at Grand Central Terminal.

Detective Chen took the key into evidence. I watched her seal it.

“You're not going to use my son as bait,” I told Anthony.

“Never,” he said.

I wanted to believe him.

But that night, after Noah fell asleep in a secure hotel room, I heard Anthony speaking to Daniel in the hallway.

“Find out whether my father signed the original order,” he said.

Daniel asked, “And if he did?”

Anthony's voice broke.

“Then everything my family built belongs in the hands of the police.”

I opened the door.

“What order?”

May you like

He looked at me for a long time.

“The one that made your mother disappear.”
