Chapter 7 - The Recording Nobody Deleted

Three years later.

I repeated those words all the way back to New York.

If Eleanor was telling the truth, my mother had survived the accident. She had been alive while I mourned her, while I married, while Noah was born.

Anthony's investigators found an old server backup that had escaped Vanessa's purge. Detective Chen obtained a warrant before anyone accessed it.

The video began with a date eleven years earlier.

Margaret stood in a nursery, wearing blue scrubs and the butterfly bracelet. Eleanor lay weakly in a chair. Baby Rose slept in a cradle.

Vanessa entered carrying a folder.

“The transport is arranged,” she said.

Margaret blocked the cradle.

“This baby isn't leaving without her mother.”

Vanessa laughed. “You don't understand who you're defying.”

“I understand exactly.”

Then Samuel appeared in the doorway.

He told Margaret to sign a medical certificate declaring Eleanor incapable of parental consent.

Margaret refused.

The recording ended as Samuel reached toward the camera.

A second file showed a hospital corridor three years later. A woman in a wheelchair passed the camera.

She was older, thinner, and her hair was cropped short.

But she was my mother.

I gripped the desk.

“Play it again.”

Detective Chen did.

Margaret turned toward someone outside the frame.

“Tell Claire I never stopped trying,” she said.

Then the recording ended.

I could not breathe.

Anthony reached for my hand, but I pulled away.

“You knew there were backups?”

“I suspected.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I didn't want to promise something I couldn't prove.”

“She's my mother. I deserved the truth even if it hurt.”

He nodded.

“You did.”

That evening, a courier delivered a package to the hotel. Inside was a cassette tape and a note written in my mother's handwriting.

Claire, if this reaches you, don't trust the man who says he can bring me home.

There was no signature beyond a tiny butterfly.

The tape contained a woman's voice, weak but unmistakable.

“Claire, sweetheart. If you hear this, I need you to know why I stayed away.”

May you like

I pressed play.

And heard my mother tell me she had made a bargain to keep me alive.
