Chapter 11 - THE SECOND FIRE

The alarm was not a drill. Smoke poured from a storage closet near the rear exit, and someone had chained the exterior gate. Detective Ruiz grabbed a fire extinguisher while an officer led the volunteers toward the front doors.

Evelyn took Lily's hand. “Stay with me.”

Lily froze at the smell of smoke. Her eyes widened, and for an instant she seemed to be back at the country house, watching flames climb a staircase.

“Look at me,” Evelyn said. “We're going out together.”

They moved low through the corridor. A ceiling panel cracked overhead. Ruiz shouted for them to use the front exit. Outside, firefighters were already arriving, and a police officer guided them across the street.

Lily collapsed against Evelyn, shaking. Adrien arrived minutes later with his driver, but he did not approach until Evelyn waved him over.

“Are you hurt?” he asked.

Lily stared at him. “You're the man from the house.”

Adrien nodded. “I'm Adrien. I should have protected you. I didn't know you were there.”

“You weren't,” Lily said. “You came after the fire. You cried.”

Adrien looked away, struggling to speak.

Ruiz's team found a damaged security camera and evidence of deliberate ignition. A witness described a man in a gray jacket leaving through the alley moments before the alarm. The description matched Marco.

Lily was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Evelyn remained beside her through every examination. The doctors found no serious injury, but recommended trauma-informed support and a stable, private environment.

“Can I live with Evie?” Lily asked.

“That's the plan,” Evelyn said. “We'll work out everything else together.”

Adrien offered a protected guesthouse on his property until the suspects were caught. Evelyn accepted only after Ruiz confirmed the arrangement was voluntary and the sisters would retain control over their own decisions.

That evening, Lily met the triplets again. Sofia approached her with a drawing of a yellow house. Nico and Luca waited behind her.

Lily knelt, tears filling her eyes. “You remember me?”

Sofia nodded and wrapped her arms around Lily's neck.

Nico touched Lily's sleeve. “Ella,” he whispered.

The room fell silent.

Luca looked at his brother, then at Lily. “You came back.”

Adrien sat down abruptly. For two years he had prayed to hear his sons' voices. Now both had spoken, not because anyone demanded it, but because someone they loved had returned.

Lily smiled through her tears. “I promised I would.”

Later, after the children slept, Evelyn found Adrien in the hallway outside their rooms. He looked exhausted, older than the photographs on magazine covers.

“I don't know how to thank you,” he said.

“Don't thank me for loving my sister.”

“I'm thanking you for reminding me how to listen to my children.”

She stood beside him for a long moment. Then she reached for his hand.

It was a small gesture, and neither of them pretended it solved the past.

Downstairs, Ruiz called with news that made their fragile peace tremble.

Marco had been arrested at a motel outside the city. In his possession was a signed statement implicating Celeste.

But he had also told investigators something unexpected.

“Celeste didn't order Lily taken from the restaurant,” Ruiz said. “Someone else did. Someone Adrien knows very well.”
