Chapter 14 - THE CONFESSION UNDER THE CITY LIGHTS

Adrien chose a small Italian restaurant on a quiet street, the kind with checkered tablecloths and a handwritten menu. Evelyn arrived in a navy dress she already owned. He stood when she approached, looking nervous enough to make her smile.

“You've faced armed men without blinking,” she said. “Why do you look terrified?”

“Because I care what you think.”

They ate pasta, talked about Lily's new school, and laughed over Sofia's latest drawing of Adrien as a dragon wearing reading glasses. For a while, they were simply two adults enjoying dinner.

Then Adrien put down his fork. “There's something you need to know.”

Evelyn waited.

“My father trained me to inherit everything. I knew some of his businesses were corrupt. I told myself I could change them gradually, without bringing the whole family down. I never knew about Lily. But I looked away from enough things that I made it easier for people like Celeste to operate.”

Evelyn felt the warmth drain from the evening. “Why tell me now?”

“Because if you ever choose to be with me, I don't want it to be because I hid the ugliest parts of my life.”

She took a slow breath. “Are you still involved in anything illegal?”

“I've ordered independent audits and turned over records to investigators. There may be consequences. I can't promise the process will be clean or quick.”

“Then don't promise me a perfect future.”

“What can I promise?”

“Tell the truth. Protect the children without controlling them. Let me decide what I want.”

Adrien nodded. “I can do that.”

They walked afterward beside the river, the city reflected in dark water. Evelyn told him about the years she had spent blaming herself for Lily's disappearance. Adrien listened without interrupting.

“You were working,” he said. “You were trying to keep your family afloat.”

“I know. But I still see her standing in that hallway.”

“You can miss those years without making yourself responsible for what others did.”

Evelyn looked at him. “You sound like someone who's been listening to his children's therapist.”

“I have,” he admitted. “And sometimes she tells me things I don't want to hear.”

“Good.”

He stopped beneath a streetlamp. “May I kiss you?”

Evelyn appreciated the question more than any expensive gift he could have offered. She stepped closer and said yes.

The kiss was gentle, uncertain, and real.

When they parted, Adrien smiled with an openness she had never seen on his face. For the first time, Evelyn imagined a future that was not defined entirely by the past.

The next morning, however, Adrien received a summons to testify before a grand jury concerning his father's businesses. His advisers warned that he might face scrutiny for decisions made before the investigation.

Evelyn found him staring at the document.

“Are you afraid?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Then go anyway.”

He looked up. “Will you still be here when it's over?”

“I can't tell you what the outcome will be,” she said. “But I won't disappear because the truth is difficult.”

May you like

He took her hand.

Outside, autumn gave way to winter. Inside the house, Lily was learning to sleep through the night, the triplets were discovering their voices, and two people who had survived very different kinds of darkness were learning how to trust.
