Chapter 14 - The Ashes Of The Red Silk Gown And The Day Caroline Gave Me Her Blessing To Love Her Son

====================================================================

The first thing I became aware of wasn't the rhythmic electronic beep of the heart monitor.

It was the smell of cedarwood, espresso, and something faintly sweet—like blue frosting.

And the feeling of two different hands holding mine.

On my left hand, the fingers were small, warm, and slightly sticky, resting gently over the IV tape on the back of my wrist.

On my right hand, the fingers were large, calloused, and gripping mine as if letting go would cause the earth to spin off its axis, with a rough, unshaven jaw resting against the edge of the white hospital mattress right beside my elbow.

I blinked slowly, my eyelids feeling as heavy as lead against the soft golden morning light filtering through the blinds.

A sharp, dull ache pulled at my left ribs when I drew in a deep breath, wrapped tightly in surgical bandages beneath a crisp cotton hospital gown.

"Miss Rachel?"

A tiny gasp came from the left side of the bed.

I turned my head slightly on the pillow.

Nine-year-old Benjamin was standing on a step-stool beside my bed, wearing his little navy blue sweater, his big brown eyes wide and shining with tears.

And hanging from the metal IV pole right above my head—next to three bags of saline and antibiotics—were at least two dozen bright blue helium balloons, their ribbons tied in neat little bows around the chrome hooks, along with glow-in-the-dark paper stars taped all over the ceiling tiles of the ICU suite.

At the sound of Benjamin's voice, Luca's head snapped up from the right side of the mattress.

He looked like he hadn't slept or changed his clothes in three days.

He was still wearing the black trousers from Friday night, paired with a rumpled gray crewneck sweater, a dark three-day shadow of beard across his strong jaw, and dark circles beneath eyes that blazed with sudden, overwhelming relief the second they met mine.

"Rachel," Luca breathed, standing up so fast he knocked the chair backward, his hand coming up to cradle the side of my face with trembling gentleness. "Can you hear me? Are you in pain?"

"Water..." I croaked, my throat feeling like sandpaper.

Luca immediately grabbed the cup of ice chips on the tray table and held the straw to my lips, supporting the back of my head with his palm so I could take two small sips.

"How long...?" I whispered, looking up at the paper stars taped to the hospital ceiling.

"Thirty-six hours," Luca said softly, his thumb brushing a stray lock of hair off my forehead as if I were made of spun glass. "The bullet went through the soft tissue on your left side and cracked your tenth rib, but it missed your spleen and your lung by less than half an inch. The surgeon took you out of recovery yesterday morning."

"You saved my life two times, Miss Rachel!" Benjamin blurted out, leaning carefully over the bedrail so he wouldn't bump my bandages. "First with the yellow needle in the car, and then when the bad man on the stairs tried to shoot me! Mommy and I taped all the constellations from my ceiling onto your room here so you wouldn't get lonely while you were sleeping!"

My eyes filled with warm tears as I looked toward the doorway of the private suite.

Sitting on the sofa near the window was my mother—her silver hair neatly brushed, resting her healing hip on a plush footstool with a warm shawl around her shoulders—smiling tearfully at me alongside Caroline and Mrs. Carter!

"Mom?" I whispered in disbelief. "How did you get here?"

"Mr. Moretti sent a private medical limousine and two nurses to pick me up from my apartment yesterday morning, honey," my mother said, wiping her eyes with a tissue as she smiled at Luca. "And he already paid off the clinic physical therapy bills and moved my things into the first-floor garden suite at his estate so I don't ever have to climb apartment stairs again."

My breath caught in my chest.

I turned my head back to look at Luca.

"You moved my mother into the estate?" I whispered.

"Do you really think I was ever going to let you or your family go back to worrying about Monday's rent after you took a bullet for my child?" Luca asked, his voice thick with emotion.

Caroline stepped over to the foot of the bed, placing a gentle hand on Benjamin's shoulder and smiling warmly at me.

"Rachel, we brought your mom out to the lounge for a cup of tea so Luca and Ben can talk to you," Caroline said softly, winking at me through her tears. "Come on, Ben—let's go get that special box Mrs. Carter brought from the bakery while your dad talks to Rachel for five minutes."

Once my mother, Caroline, and Benjamin stepped out into the adjoining family lounge and pulled the sliding glass door shut, the quiet hospital room felt suddenly charged with an intensity that made my heart monitor speed up by ten beats a minute.

Luca didn't sit back down in the chair.

Instead, the thirty-six-year-old head of the Moretti empire—a man who didn't bow to judges, councilmen, or rival bosses—slowly sank down onto both knees on the hospital floor right beside my bed, keeping my right hand held tightly against his chest, right over his heart.

"Luca, what are you doing?" I whispered, trying to pull him up. "Get off the floor—"

"No," Luca said, his voice raw as he pressed his forehead against the back of my hand. "When I saw you lying on those concrete steps by the lake with my blood—your blood—all over my hands, and Ben screaming your name, my heart stopped, Rachel. For eight years since Caroline and I realized we were better friends than spouses, I convinced myself that a man in my position didn't need love. I convinced myself that marriage was just a business contract, a political alliance to secure the ports and give Ben a stable house."

He lifted his head, his dark eyes glistening with unshed tears as he looked straight into mine.

"And because I was blind and cold, I almost brought a monster into my home who would have destroyed the only person in this world who mattered to me," Luca whispered fiercely. "Until a twenty-five-year-old girl in a maid's uniform stood up in front of thirty-two people and refused to let go of a blue balloon."

A tear slipped down my temple into my hair.

"I didn't do it for a reward, Luca," I whispered, calling him by his first name for the very first time. "I did it because Ben deserved someone in his corner."

"I know you did," Luca murmured, reaching up to wipe the tear from my cheek with his thumb. "And that's why I fell in love with you before we ever walked out of that dining room on Friday night."

My heart gave a violent, wonderful thud against my bandaged ribs.

"Wait," I breathed. "You—what?"

"I fell in love with you when you sat on the bedroom floor gluing my son's model airplane together at midnight," Luca said softly, kissing the center of my palm. "I fell in love with you when you counted to ten with an EpiPen in the back of a speeding truck while everyone else was falling apart. And when you stepped in front of that gun on the seawall, Rachel, you didn't just save my son's life—you claimed mine. All of it. Forever."

I stared at this powerful, fiercely protective man kneeling beside my hospital bed, and all the walls I had built between "Mr. Moretti the employer" and the man whose dark eyes had made my pulse race for fourteen months came tumbling down.

I reached out with my free hand and slid my fingers into his thick, dark hair, pulling him up until his lips met mine.

He kissed me with a devastating, breathless tenderness—careful not to press against my bruised ribs, yet pouring thirty-six hours of terror, gratitude, and fierce devotion into that single touch until I was completely dizzy.

Just as he drew back, resting his forehead against mine with a quiet, shaky laugh, a polite little knock sounded on the sliding glass door.

Benjamin was peeking through the blinds with one eye open, holding a small white bakery box tied with a blue ribbon.

May you like

"Daddy?" Benjamin called through the glass. "Are you done kissing Miss Rachel yet? Because the candle is going to melt before I get to make my wish!"
