Chapter 6 - The Emergency Hospital Run At 2 A.M. And The Allergy Medication That Was Deliberately Locked Away

====================================================================
Luca's private study at the back of the first floor smelled of cedarwood, espresso, and old leather.
A low fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting flickering amber shadows across the bookshelves as Mrs. Carter brought in two mugs of hot tea laced with honey before excusing herself to check on Caroline and Benjamin upstairs.
I sat on the edge of the leather Chesterfield sofa, wrapping my cold hands around the porcelain mug while Luca sat behind his massive mahogany desk and plugged the tiny silver USB flash drive into his encrypted laptop.
For a few seconds, only the clicking of the keys and the crackle of the fireplace filled the room.
Then the glow of the monitor reflected sharply against Luca's cheekbones.
I watched his dark eyebrows draw together.
"What is it?" I asked quietly, setting my tea down and walking around the side of his desk.
Luca didn't push me away or hide the screen like an employer protecting private business.
Instead, he angled the laptop slightly toward me so we could both see the folders open on the desktop.
There were three encrypted directories, all unlocked automatically by the hardware key built into the USB drive:
1. Estate Renovation & Trust Restructuring
2. Northwestern Memorial — Private OB/GYN Records
3. Bellini-Moretti Port Authority Transfer
Luca clicked open the first folder.
A detailed architectural blueprint of the Moretti mansion's third floor filled the screen, dated six weeks ago—long before the engagement party had even been announced to the public.
Benjamin's bedroom, along with the adjoining playroom and study, had been completely redrawn on the blueprint as a luxury master nursery and live-in maternity suite.
And beside the blueprint was a scanned draft of a legal codicil to Luca's family trust, drafted by Victor Bellini's law firm.
"Look at Clause Four," I whispered, leaning down over Luca's shoulder and pointing at the highlighted paragraph on the screen.
"In the event that a minor heir from a prior marriage resides continuously outside the United States for a period exceeding twenty-four consecutive months, primary control of the Moretti Shipping Trust shall automatically vest in the current spouse and any biological issue born of the second marriage."
I heard Luca's breath catch in his chest.
"That's why it had to be Switzerland," I breathed, the horrifying puzzle clicking together in my mind. "If she sent Benjamin to a boarding school in Illinois or New York, the trust wouldn't change. She needed him out of the country for two straight years so she could legally strip him of his birthright."
"My grandfather wrote that residency clause into the original 1962 trust charter to prevent heirs from moving the family fortune back to Sicily," Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal murmur. "Nobody outside my personal estate attorney has ever seen that charter. Which means she went into my safe while I was asleep."
Then he clicked open the second folder: Northwestern Memorial — Private OB/GYN Records.
Four high-resolution PDF files popped up on the screen.
I squinted at the black-and-white ultrasound image at the top of the first file.
"Wait," I said, gripping the back of Luca's leather chair. "At the dinner table tonight, when you asked Vanessa if she was pregnant because of the baby candles Benjamin found, she swore she wasn't."
"She did," Luca said coldly, zooming in on the top right corner of the ultrasound image.
The patient name on the scan didn't say Vanessa Bellini.
It said Jane Doe — Private VIP Cash Account #88412.
Right below the patient ID was the patient's date of birth: May 14, 1998.
"That's Vanessa's birthday," I gasped. "I typed it onto the seating cards for her family table this morning! And look at the gestational age on the scan, Mr. Moretti—*14 Weeks, 3 Days.*"
Luca went completely motionless in his chair.
"Fourteen weeks," he repeated slowly, each word dropping like lead into the quiet study.
"Yes, sir. Over three months pregnant."
"Fourteen weeks ago," Luca said, turning his head slowly to look up at me, "I was in Milan and Naples for the entire month of June settling the Mediterranean shipping contracts. I didn't see Vanessa for thirty-six days."
My hand flew to my throat.
"She's pregnant with someone else's baby," I whispered.
"She's three and a half months pregnant with another man's child," Luca corrected, his eyes turning as black and cold as Lake Michigan in January. "Which is why she refused to postpone the wedding until spring, why she tried to rush the ceremony into a four-day engagement window, and why she bought newborn candles and a crib while swearing to my face tonight that there was no baby."
If she had denied being pregnant in front of thirty-two guests tonight, it was because admitting she was already starting her second trimester would have made Luca—or anyone who knew his travel schedule—do the math on the spot!
Instead, she had planned to marry him on Saturday, go to Amalfi for two weeks, and then announce a "miracle honeymoon pregnancy" that would miraculously arrive "two months premature" in the spring—just in time to claim the Moretti family fortune while nine-year-old Benjamin was locked away in a Swiss boarding school!
I clicked on the final PDF in the medical folder—an insurance waiver and emergency contact sheet signed at the private clinic in downtown Chicago.
Listed under Biological Father / Emergency Contact was a redacted black bar, except for a private cell phone number with a 312 area code and two initials at the bottom of the consent line:
D. R.
Luca stared at those two initials for three heartbeats.
When he spoke, his voice didn't even sound human anymore.
"Dante Russo."
Even I knew that name.
Dante Russo was the underboss of the East Side outfit—Luca's fiercest rival on the Chicago docks, and the man who had tried to hijack three of Luca's container ships last winter.
"She wasn't just trying to replace Ben," Luca said, standing up slowly from his desk as the full scale of the betrayal filled the room. "Victor Bellini and Dante Russo are using her unborn child to take over the Moretti empire from the inside—and once that baby was born and Ben was in Switzerland, neither Ben nor I would have survived the year."
A chill ran through my blood from my head to my heels.
This wasn't just a cruel stepmother anymore.
This was a coup.
And by catching that blue balloon at the dinner table tonight—by refusing to keep quiet about Benjamin's birthday and finding that key outside the closet—I hadn't just ruined Vanessa's engagement party.
I had accidentally stepped directly into the middle of a war between the two most dangerous crime families in Chicago.
Suddenly, from the third floor directly above our heads, a frantic voice screamed down the stairwell:
May you like
"Luca! Rachel! Help! Benjamin can't breathe!"
