Chapter 7 - Caught In The Crossfire: Luca Slams The Engagement Ring On The Table And Declares War On His Own Circle

Salvatore Bellini was sixty-two years old, with silver hair slicked back against his scalp, an immaculate bespoke charcoal coat, and cold, dead eyes that had ordered dozens of executions during the Chicago dock wars. Behind him stood Vanessa, still wearing her red Valentino silk gown beneath an oversized leather coat, her eyes bloodshot, manic, and full of venom.
"I knew your sentimental heart would lead you straight to Caroline's trinkets, Luca," Salvatore said, his voice dripping with condescending amusement. "You always were too soft for this city. My daughter called me in tears from your front gate. You humiliated my blood in front of thirty of the most powerful men in Illinois."
Luca didn't flinch. He didn't drop the book. With terrifying calm, he stepped sideways, placing his broad frame directly between Salvatore’s gunmen and me, shielding me completely from their line of sight.
"Your daughter is a thief and an accomplice to murder, Salvatore," Luca said, his voice flat, devoid of fear. "And you are a dead man walking."
Vanessa stepped forward, her manicured finger pointing furiously at me from around her father's shoulder. "Kill that little whore first! She’s the one who brought that senile old woman into the dining room! She ruined everything!"
"Shut your mouth, Vanessa," Luca interrupted, his tone chillingly level. "You stole forty million dollars from my dead wife's estate. You abandoned a three-year-old child in an unheated apartment on 59th Street. And worst of all, Salvatore... you cut Caroline's brake lines."
Salvatore’s thin smile faded, replaced by an ugly, calculating sneer. "Caroline Vance became greedy. She thought marrying you gave her the right to audit my accounts. She threatened to show you the shipping manifests we were using to move cargo through Lake Michigan. If she had handed you those manifests four years ago, you would have declared war on my family then. I simply took preventative measures."
"You murdered my wife," Luca stated, not a question, but a final verdict.
"And now, I'm going to bury her little maid and you right beside her," Salvatore raised his hand, gesturing to his gunmen. "Chicago needs a younger, more ruthless council head. Once you're gone, your captains will fall in line with me. Take them down."
Before Salvatore's hand could drop, the darkness behind the shelving units exploded into deafening chaos.
THWACK. THWACK. THWACK.
Three suppressed shots punched through the damp basement air. Two of Salvatore's gunmen collapsed to the floor instantly, their weapons clattering across the concrete. Marcus and three Moretti operatives stepped out from the adjacent storage aisle, their rifles raised, red laser sights painting glowing dots directly onto Salvatore Bellini’s chest and forehead.
"Did you honestly believe I entered this facility without sweeping the perimeter, Salvatore?" Luca asked, his voice low and mocking. "You've grown sloppy in your old age."
Salvatore froze, his eyes darting frantically to the laser dots dancing across his coat. Vanessa let out a strangled shriek, diving behind a metal filing cabinet.
Luca walked forward, each step slow, deliberate, and echoing like the strike of a pendulum. He pulled the five-carat engagement ring from his trouser pocket—the ring Vanessa had thrown onto his desk hours earlier—and flipped it through the air.
It landed with a sharp clink on the concrete right at Salvatore’s polished Italian leather shoes.
"The alliance between Moretti and Bellini is broken," Luca declared, his dark eyes boring into the older man's skull. "As of this second, the docks, the transport routes, and every commercial asset your family claims in this city are forfeit under Moretti authority."
"You can't do that!" Salvatore hissed through clenched teeth, sweat beading across his forehead. "The Commission won't allow a unilateral war! The other five families will crush you!"
"The Commission rules on disputes between honorable men," Luca countered, his hand dropping to the grip of his pistol. "Not child abusers and backstabbing cowards who tamper with women's brakes. I have the ledgers. I have the forensic vehicle reports. And within two hours, every family head in the Midwest will have a digital copy of your betrayal on their desks."
"Luca... please!" Vanessa suddenly crawled out from behind the cabinet, her makeup smeared across her tear-streaked cheeks, her hands shaking as she reached toward him. "Don't do this! I did it for us! I wanted us to have an empire without Caroline’s shadow hanging over us! I loved you!"
Luca didn't even look down at her. "You never loved anyone, Vanessa. You loved my name, my money, and the power that came with standing on my arm."
He turned back to Marcus. "Disarm them. Confiscate their phones, their vehicles, and their communications. Lock them in the secure holding facility at the South Chicago rail yard. Salvatore faces the Commission at noon. Vanessa stays in a cell until the federal fraud indictments are filed."
"No! Dad, do something!" Vanessa screamed as two Moretti guards dragged her kicking and screaming toward the emergency exit. Salvatore said nothing, his face twisted in silent, murderous rage as plastic zip-ties were bound tightly around his wrists.
The basement grew quiet again, save for the hum of the fluorescent fixtures. Luca turned to me. His hand gently caught my right elbow, steadying me as a wave of dizziness washed over my eyes.
"Are you hurt, Anna?"
"No," I breathed, looking down at the journal clutched against his chest. "I'm just... tired. Is it over?"
Luca looked at the bloodstained bandages on my hand, then out into the rainy morning light beginning to filter through the high street-level grates.

"For Caroline, it's over," he said softly. "For us, it's just beginning. We have a little girl waiting for us at home."
