Chapter 9 - Vanessa’s Collapse At The High-Society Gala, A Public Exposé, And The Hidden Bloodline That Changes Everything

By 11:30 AM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel on Michigan Avenue was overflowing with reporters, flashbulbs, and over two hundred of Chicago’s high-society elite.

Today was supposed to be the pre-wedding press conference where Luca Moretti and Vanessa Bellini formally announced their high-profile union, consolidating two of the city's largest transport and commercial dynasties. The media had gathered expecting champagne toasts, floral displays, and society gossip.

Instead, the atmosphere inside the ballroom was thick with uneasy tension.

Rumors had already begun leaking through the early-morning wire services that Salvatore Bellini had been detained by private authorities and that the Bellini shipping terminals along the Calumet River were under sudden, aggressive federal audit.

I stood in the wings of the elevated stage, wearing a tailored navy silk dress that Mrs. Carter had provided, my left hand neatly covered with a clean, discreet beige compression bandage. Beside me stood Richard Whitmore, dressed in a sharp gray suit, holding Mia’s hand. The little girl looked pristine in a dark velvet frock, her eyes wide as she took in the dazzling chandeliers and the sea of murmuring reporters below.

"Are you nervous?" Richard whispered to me.

"A little," I admitted, my heart fluttering against my ribs. "But they need to see her."

Suddenly, the side doors opened, and Luca walked onto the stage.

He wore a tailored midnight-black three-piece suit, his posture commanding, his expression carved from dark granite. The room instantly fell into dead silence. Over fifty camera flashes erupted in blinding strobes, reflecting off the dark wood podium as Luca stepped up to the microphones.

He didn't read from a prepared statement. He didn't smile.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, members of the civic council," Luca’s voice resonated through the state-of-the-art sound system, deep, clear, and unshakeable. "You were invited here today to witness the formal announcement of my upcoming wedding to Vanessa Bellini. That wedding has been cancelled."

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom like a sudden gust of wind. Reporters instantly began shouting questions, clamoring against the press barricades.

"Quiet," Luca ordered. The single word carried enough steel to choke off every microphone in the room.

"Forty-eight hours ago, critical financial and forensic evidence came into my possession regarding the fraudulent embezzlement of forty million dollars from the late Caroline Vance Moretti's estate," Luca continued, gesturing toward the massive digital projection screens flanking the stage.

The screens flickered to life, displaying high-resolution scans of the forged adoption documents, the offshore wire transfers carrying Vanessa and Salvatore Bellini's signatures, and the Cook County accident reconstruction report confirming the sabotage of Caroline's vehicle.

The press corps went into an absolute frenzy. Camera shutters clicked like machine-gun fire.

"Furthermore," Luca's voice rose with absolute authority, "the federal authorities, alongside the State Attorney's office, have executed arrest warrants for Salvatore Bellini on charges of grand larceny, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder."

The double doors at the back of the ballroom suddenly banged open.

"IT'S A LIE! HE'S FRAMING US!"

Vanessa Bellini came stumbling down the center aisle between the rows of journalists. She had escaped from temporary house custody with the help of a corrupt private driver, her hair disheveled, her expensive coat torn at the hem, her eyes frantic and bloodshot. Two hotel security guards tried to intercept her, but she shoved past them like a madwoman, clawing her way toward the stage.

"Luca! You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed into the blinding flashbulbs, tears destroying her foundation. "I gave you four years of my life! You're destroying my family based on the lies of a thieving housemaid and a senile old woman!"

Luca didn't flinch as she reached the base of the stage. He simply looked down at her with cold, pitiless detachment.

"You didn't give me four years, Vanessa," Luca said into the microphone, his words echoing across the entire hall. "You stole four years from me. And you stole nine years from my child."

Luca turned toward the stage wing and held out his hand. "Mia. Come here, sweetheart."

The entire room held its collective breath as Richard gently nudged Mia forward. The little girl walked out into the bright stage lights, her small hand slipping securely into Luca's large, protective grasp.

Luca lifted her up, holding her against his chest as if she were made of spun glass. He turned her toward the cameras, letting the entire world see Caroline’s unmistakable features, Caroline’s hazel eyes, and the undeniable truth written across the child's face.

"This is Mia Vance Moretti," Luca declared, his voice ringing with fierce, fatherly pride. "The biological daughter of my late wife, Caroline, and myself. Kept hidden by fraudulent conspiracy, raised in secret, and now returned to her rightful home as the sole heir to the Moretti legacy."

Vanessa let out a choked, guttural sound, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared up at the little girl in Luca's arms. The reality of her total, absolute ruin crashed down upon her in front of every news outlet in the state. Her legs buckled under the weight of the cameras, and she collapsed onto the plush ballroom carpet in a sobbing, hysterical heap as federal marshals moved in, clicking steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Flashbulbs illuminated her humiliation from every angle as she was hauled away through the crowd.

Luca lowered Mia back to the stage floor, then turned his gaze directly toward where I was standing in the shadows of the curtain. Before the entire press corps of Chicago, Luca Moretti stepped away from the podium, walked across the platform, and extended his hand to me.

"Anna," he said, loud enough for the nearest microphones to catch every syllable. "Walk with us."

May you like

My breath caught in my throat. I looked at the hundreds of flashing cameras, then into Luca’s dark, unwavering eyes. I stepped out of the shadows, placing my hand into his, and together with Mia between us, we walked off the stage into the blinding light of a new world.
