Chapter 12 - THE FALL OF AN EMPIRE

Three weeks later, the headlines of the *Chicago Tribune* dominated every newsstand in the Midwest.
*BELLINI SYNDICATE DISMANTLED: BILLION-DOLLAR MONEY LAUNDERING RING EXPOSED.*
*MARIA MORETTI COMMUNITY KITCHEN REOPENS WITH PERMANENT FEDERAL PROTECTION.*
I sat at the wooden kitchen table of the Moretti estate, sipping a warm cup of coffee.
The house felt different now.
The cold, sterile intimidation of Vanessa’s reign was gone, replaced by the warm, inviting scent of baking bread and fresh coffee.
Anthony Russo sat across from me, smiling widely as he buttered a warm dinner roll.
“Your wife’s medical treatments are fully covered for the next ten years, Mr. Russo,” I said softly.
Anthony wiped a tear from his wrinkled cheek.
“Call me Anthony, sweetheart. And thanks to you and Luca, the community kitchen is feeding four hundred families every single day.”
Heavy footsteps echoed down the hall.
Luca walked into the kitchen.
He wore a simple black sweater, no jacket, no gun holster.
For the first time in months, he looked relaxed.
He looked like a man who had finally laid his ghosts to rest.
“Anthony,” Luca nodded respectfully to the old gardener.
“The car is waiting outside to take you home to your wife.”
Anthony stood up, shaking Luca’s hand firmly, then giving me a gentle hug.
“You two take care of each other,” the old man whispered with a knowing wink before shuffling out the door.

The kitchen fell into a comfortable, warm silence.
Just me and Luca.
