Chapter 5 - TUNNEL OF SECRETS

The concrete walls of the underground passage pressed in from all sides.

Water dripped rhythmically into puddles somewhere in the pitch-black distance.

Luca moved with absolute confidence, guiding me by the hand through the damp labyrinth.

His grip was iron-tight, warm, and steady.

“Where are we going?” I whispered into the dark, my voice trembling.

“Safe room beneath the old carriage house,” Luca replied without slowing his pace.

“Nobody outside my inner circle knows this tunnel exists.”

“Not even Vanessa?” I asked, testing the boundaries.

Luca paused for a fraction of a second.

“Especially not Vanessa.”

We walked another fifty yards before a soft amber light illuminated a reinforced steel door.

Luca punched a complex numerical code into the digital keypad.

*BEEP.*

The heavy bolts retracted with a mechanical hiss.

Inside, the safe room was a high-tech command center.

Monitors lined the walls, displaying live feeds of every room in the Chicago estate.

On screen three, I watched three men in black tactical gear kicking open the kitchen doors.

They swept the room, finding the unconscious intruder on the floor.

“They know we’re gone,” I whispered, watching the monitors.

“They know we used the passage,” Luca corrected, pulling out a tactical laptop.

He tapped the keyboard with furious speed.

“Watch this.”

On camera five, the secret panel behind the pantry slid open.

A man in a custom Italian suit stepped out of the tunnel entrance inside the house.

Even through the grainy night-vision lens, I recognized the sharply groomed gray hair and cold arrogance.

“My father,” Luca whispered.

My breath hitched.

“Your father? I thought your father passed away years ago.”

“That’s what the newspapers were paid to print,” Luca said, his jaw tightening until the muscle ticked.

“Vincenzo Bellini isn't just Vanessa's father.”

He turned the laptop screen toward me.

“He’s the senior partner of the syndicate that orchestrated my mother’s assassination six years ago.”

The room spun around me.

The ground felt like it was dissolving beneath my boots.

“Maria Moretti didn't die of a heart attack,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.

“She was murdered. And the Bellini family signed the death warrant.”

I stared at the screen, watching Vincenzo Bellini walk calmly through the blood-stained kitchen.

He stopped right beside the garbage can where Vanessa had thrown away Anthony’s food.

He reached down, picked up the crumpled white napkin, and stared directly into the hidden camera lens.

As if he knew we were watching.

As if he was inviting us to a war he planned to finish.

Luca slammed the laptop shut.

The screen went dark.

“Pack your bags, Emma,” Luca whispered, stepping close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his chest.

“Tomorrow, we hunt.”

And the cliffhanger hung heavy in the cold air:

May you like

Vincenzo Bellini didn't just want the soup kitchen property—he wanted the entire Moretti dynasty burned to ash.

And I was standing right in the center of the crossfire.
