Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH REVEALED

I stared at the papers in my hand, my mind completely paralyzed.
Nico and Noah's legal guardians... were Lena?
Before I could process the words, a sudden noise echoed from the bottom of the attic stairs.
Footsteps.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps ascending the wooden steps.
"Ethan?" Lena whispered, her face draining of all color.
"Did you hear that?"
I stepped in front of her, shielding her with my body, and grabbed my flashlight as a makeshift club.
The attic door creaked open slowly.
A tall figure stepped out into the dim light.
It wasn't the scarred blackmailer.
It was Special Agent Vance from the FBI.
He looked around the dusty attic, taking in the broken drywall and the open steel safe in my hand.
"Agent Vance?" I asked, lowering my makeshift weapon in utter confusion.
"What are you doing here?"
Agent Vance exhaled slowly, slipping his hands into his coat pockets.
"I'm sorry it had to come to this, Mr. Caldwell," Vance said softly.
There was no warmth in his voice.
Just cold, procedural detachment.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, gripping the adoption papers tighter.
"Margaret wasn't just running a trafficking ring for profit, Ethan," Vance explained, stepping closer.
"She was part of an underground surrogate syndicate."
"And Miss Morales here..."
He pointed directly at Lena.
"...wasn't just a random nanny who applied online."
I turned slowly to look at Lena.
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
Her head was bowed, tears streaming silently down her cheeks.
"Lena?" I whispered, my heart shattering into a million pieces.
"Tell me he's lying."
Lena looked up at me, her eyes filled with profound sorrow.
"I'm so sorry, Ethan," she sobbed.
"I never meant to hurt you."
"Then explain it!" I yelled, the rage and heartbreak boiling over.
"Explain why my sons' adoption papers have your name on them before you ever stepped foot in my house!"
"Because they're my children, Ethan," Lena whispered, the devastating truth finally tearing through the silence.
"Sarah didn't give birth to Nico and Noah."
"I did."
The attic seemed to spin off its axis.
"What...?" I breathed, staggering backward.
"Margaret approached me three years ago when I was desperate and drowning in medical debt," Lena explained, her voice breaking.
"She offered me a surrogate contract with a wealthy, grieving businessman named Ethan Caldwell."
"She told me you wanted children more than anything in the world."
"She promised I would be their nanny after they were born, that I would be part of their lives."
"But once they were born, Margaret and Sarah locked me out."
"They forged the adoption documents, erased my identity from the hospital records, and treated me like a prisoner in my own home."
"I didn't come here to destroy your family, Ethan."
"I came here to get my babies back."
I stared at her, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in my mind.
Why the boys called her Mama.
Why they laughed with her instantly.
Why she fought so hard to protect them.
She wasn't a stranger.
May you like
She was their biological mother.
And Margaret had stolen them from both of us.
