Chapter 8 - THE INTERROGATION ROOM

The interrogation room at the federal field office was cold, sterile, and bathed in harsh fluorescent light.
I sat on one side of a thick stainless steel table.
A mirrored observation glass dominated the opposite wall.
Across from me sat Special Agent Vance, a weathered man with sharp gray eyes and a crisp federal suit.
He flipped open a thick manila folder.
"Well, Mr. Caldwell," Agent Vance said, looking up from the documents.
"Your emergency legal trigger saved your assets."
"The fifty million dollar offshore transfer was intercepted and frozen just seconds before completion."
"Margaret and Sarah had been operating this scam for over six years."
I stared down at my scarred knuckles.
"How many families did they destroy?" I asked quietly.
Agent Vance exhaled slowly.
"At least four other wealthy households before yours."
"They used Margaret as a plant housekeeper to infiltrate high-net-worth estates."
"Once established, Sarah played the ghost, living in subterranean bunkers built underneath the properties."
"They drugged the children to ensure compliance, systematically isolated the fathers with fake business trips, and blacked out the mothers who tried to resist."
My stomach churned.
"And Sarah went along with it willingly?"
"She wasn't a hostage, Mr. Caldwell," Agent Vance said gently.
"She orchestrated the financial side of the operation."
"She wanted out of her marriage, but she wanted your fortune even more."
"She'll spend the rest of her life behind bars."
"What about Margaret?"
"Extradited to face federal racketeering charges across three different states."
"Neither of them is ever seeing daylight again."
I nodded slowly.
The weight of the nightmare finally began to lift from my shoulders.
"Can I go home now?" I asked.
Agent Vance offered a reassuring smile.
"Of course."
"Your security detail has been fully reset."
"And Miss Morales is waiting for you outside with your sons."
I stood up from the metal chair, buttoning my suit jacket.
Stepping out of the interrogation room, the bright lights of the lobby welcomed me.
And there, sitting on a cushioned bench near the reception desk, was Lena.
Nico was resting his head gently against her shoulder, fast asleep.
Noah was playing quietly with a small plastic toy car.
When Lena looked up and saw me, her face lit up with overwhelming relief.
She stood up immediately, walking over to me.
"Mr. Caldwell," she breathed, her voice shaking slightly.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, Lena," I said softly, looking down at my boys.
Nico stirred, opening his big brown eyes.
He looked up at me.
Recognized my face.
And without any hesitation, reached his tiny arms out toward me.
"Daddy," he whispered clearly.
I scooped him up into my arms, burying my face in his soft hair as tears finally broke free from my eyes.
May you like
Lena smiled, a single tear rolling down her cheek.
And for the first time in years, the future felt bright, safe, and entirely real.
