Chapter 9 - A NEW DAWN IN WASHINGTON

The morning sun washed over the grand Washington mansion, casting a warm golden glow across the manicured lawns.

The police tape was gone.

The federal agents had packed up their gear hours ago.

Inside the nursery, the air smelled of fresh lavender and baby powder instead of clinical disinfectants and fear.

I sat in the rocking chair by the window, watching Nico and Noah build a wobbly tower out of wooden blocks.

They were laughing.

Real, joyous, uninhibited laughter that filled every corner of the house.

Lena sat on the rug beside them, wearing her bright yellow rubber gloves just like she had the day I caught them.

"Oh no!" Lena gasped playfully.

"The monster is going to knock over the tower!"

Nico shrieked with delight, tossing a plush pillow directly at her head.

"Take that, monster!" Noah cheered, clapping his tiny hands together.

I couldn't help but smile.

My phone buzzed on the side table.

It was a notification from my legal team confirming that all corporate accounts were fully secured, and Margaret's secret corporate network had been completely dismantled.

The nightmare was officially over.

The ghosts of the past had been laid to rest.

Margaret was locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

Sarah was facing a lifetime in federal custody without the possibility of parole.

And my boys were safe, happy, and thriving.

Lena stood up, brushing off her jeans as the twins grew tired and leaned against her knees.

"They're wearing me out, Mr. Caldwell," Lena joked, catching her breath.

"I think it's time for their morning nap."

"I'll handle it, Lena," I said, standing up from the rocking chair.

"You've earned a break."

She smiled warmly.

"Actually, I don't mind staying."

"I've grown quite attached to these little princes."

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Beyond the nanny uniform.

Beyond the chaos of the past week.

I saw a woman of extraordinary courage, kindness, and unwavering loyalty.

A woman who had risked everything to protect my children when no one else would.

"I know you have," I said softly, stepping closer.

"And I don't know how I can ever truly thank you."

Lena's cheeks flushed a soft pink.

"Just keeping them safe is thanks enough, Mr. Caldwell."

"Ethan," I corrected gently.

"Please... call me Ethan."

Her smile softened.

"Ethan," she repeated.

The way she said my name sent a quiet, unfamiliar warmth through my chest.

A feeling I hadn't experienced in years.

Hope.

Life was finally returning to normal.

Or rather, building a brand new normal that was stronger and brighter than before.
