Chapter 2 - SHADOWS IN THE HALLWAY

The silence in the grand foyer felt heavy enough to choke.

Damian Hollis stood frozen between his trembling fiancée and his terrified daughter.

His sharp gaze did not leave Viviana’s pale face.

Viviana swallowed hard, forcing a fragile, wounded smile back onto her lips.

"Damian," she whispered, her voice trembling with manufactured hurt. "You surely don't believe a confused child over me."

Grace pressed her face deeper into the fabric of Lara’s maid apron.

Her small shoulders shook with silent sobs.

Lara kept her hands carefully at her sides, refusing to move.

She knew the danger of stepping out of place in this house.

Damian stepped forward, the leather of his shoes clicking sharply against the marble floor.

"Grace," he said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "Look at me."

The little girl slowly lifted her tear-stained face.

"Did Viviana hurt Lara?" Damian asked.

Grace glanced sideways at Viviana’s rigid posture.

A silent, chilling message passed between the adult woman and the child.

Grace looked down at the floor. "I... I don't remember, Daddy."

Viviana let out a soft, theatrical breath of relief.

Her shoulders dropped from their tense position.

"See, Damian?" she murmured, stepping closer to touch his arm. "She’s just terrified of the maid. Lara has been manipulating her."

Lara felt a cold knot twist in her stomach.

She opened her mouth to speak, but caught Damian’s warning glare.

"Go to your room, Lara," Damian commanded without looking at her.

"Yes, Mr. Hollis," Lara murmured, gently untangling Grace’s fingers from her apron.

She walked up the sweeping staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Behind her, Viviana’s voice grew soft and sweet again.

"Let's get you some tea, Damian. You've had a long day at the firm."

Lara reached the top landing and slipped into the dim hallway.

She pressed her back against the cool wallpaper.

Through the open balustrade, she watched Damian turn away from his daughter.

He allowed Viviana to lead him toward the study.

Grace stood alone in the center of the vast, empty foyer.

The little girl wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve.

Then, Grace raised her head and stared straight up at Lara.

Her expression was no longer that of a frightened child.

It was cold, calculating, and full of warning.

Lara felt a shiver race down her spine.

Something darker was happening inside the Hollis mansion than anyone knew.

And Lara was trapped right in the middle of it.

She retreated down the corridor toward the servants' quarters.

The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her.

She sat on the edge of her narrow cot, her mind racing.

Viviana was hiding something massive.

And Damian was walking blindfolded into a trap.

Lara pulled a small leather-bound journal from beneath her mattress.

She flicked to the last written page.

Dates, times, and missing financial records were jotted down in neat ink.

Viviana had been transferring funds from the Hollis accounts for months.

And today, Grace had almost exposed the entire operation.

Why had the child suddenly covered for Viviana?

Fear? Or a bribe?

Lara reached for her phone to check the security camera logs she had secretly backed up.

The screen flickered.

No signal.

The Wi-Fi in the servants' wing had been deliberately disabled.

Lara’s breath hitched in her throat.

Footsteps echoed softly outside her wooden door.

Heavy. Deliberate. Stopping right in front of her room.

The doorknob turned slowly.

The latch clicked.

May you like

Lara stood up, her fingers tightening around the heavy metal lamp on her nightstand.

The door swung open into the dark room.
