Chapter 11 - WHISPERS IN THE ARCHIVES

Spring had finally arrived in Chicago.

Melting the last stubborn patches of winter snow and painting the estate’s sprawling gardens in vibrant shades of green and gold.

The transformation of Moretti Holdings was complete.

The corrupt lawyers, the parasitic syndicates, and the cold, calculating social climbers were nothing more than a distant memory.

Locked away in federal prison cells where they belonged.

In my new office on the second floor—formerly Victor Vance’s corrupt legal suite, now completely remodeled—I sat behind a sleek glass desk reviewing the first round of community grant applications.

The door clicked open, and Sofia walked in, carrying little Elena in a lightweight carrier.

The baby was now three months old, bright-eyed, and kicking her chubby legs happily.

“Hannah, do you have a minute?” Sofia asked, smiling brightly.

“Of course, Sofia,” I said, standing up immediately and walking over to greet them.

“How is our favorite niece doing today?”

“She’s sleeping through the night, thank goodness,” Sofia laughed, setting the carrier down on a comfortable sofa.

“Mom is downstairs knitting another sweater—this time in pale blue for autumn.”

“She wanted me to bring you these financial ledgers from the old foundation archives in the basement vault.”

My eyebrows raised.

“The basement vault? I thought federal investigators cleared all of those files out months ago.”

“They took the digital servers and active criminal evidence,” Sofia explained, sitting down in one of the armchairs.

“But the archivist found a locked metal trunk wedged behind the old filing cabinets.”

“It has your name on it, Hannah.”

My heart skipped a beat.

“My name?”

Sofia nodded, sliding a small brass key across the coffee table.

“Grandma Teresa remembers seeing Victor Vance and Vanessa down in the sub-level archive room about a week before the engagement dinner.”

“She said they were whispering about you.”

A cold chill ran down my spine.

I picked up the brass key, thanked Sofia, and walked down the grand staircase into the subterranean levels of the mansion.

The air down here was cool, smelling of old paper and damp stone.

I found the archive room at the very end of the hall.

In the back corner, half-hidden behind stacks of discarded ledgers, sat a heavy iron security trunk.

I inserted the brass key into the lock.

It turned with a heavy, satisfying click.

I lifted the lid.

Inside wasn't corporate paperwork.

It was a collection of newspaper clippings, financial statements, and birth certificates dating back twenty-five years.

And right at the top was a sealed manila envelope labeled in Victor Vance’s precise handwriting:

*HARRIS-COLLINS FAMILY: SURVEILLANCE & CONTINGENCY FILE.*

My hands shook as I pulled the envelope open.

Inside were photographs of my mother and me walking down our old neighborhood street five years ago.

And attached to the back of the photographs was a legal document proving something that made my breath stop entirely.

Vanessa Bellini and Victor Vance hadn't just targeted the Moretti family.

They had orchestrated my mother’s medical crisis five years ago to force our family into debt—making sure I had no choice, years later, but to apply for a housekeeping job at the Moretti estate.

They had hand-picked me.

I wasn't just a random housekeeper who stumbled into their trap.

I was the pawn they intended to frame for the entire financial embezzlement scheme.
