Chapter 12 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

The discovery in the basement vault hit me like a physical blow.

I sat on a wooden stool in the damp archive room, the manila envelope clutched tightly in my trembling hands.

Every photograph, every forged medical bill, every bank transfer timestamped from five years ago.

It was all meticulously planned.

Vanessa Bellini had spent half a decade engineering a safety net of disposable scapegoats.

And I was supposed to be the final sacrifice when their corporate theft of Moretti Holdings finally triggered federal alarms.

If Luca hadn't intercepted that security log... if Teresa hadn't spoken up at the dinner table... I would currently be sitting in a federal prison cell wearing an orange jumpsuit.

The anger rose inside me hot and fast, replacing the shock.

I gathered the documents, placed them back inside the manila envelope, and locked the iron trunk.

I needed to show Luca immediately.

Up on the third floor, the study doors were open.

I didn't knock. I rushed straight in, my breath coming in short gasps.

Luca was standing by his desk, reviewing architectural blueprints for the new community clinic.

When he saw my face, his expression hardened instantly.

“Hannah? What happened?” he asked, taking two long strides toward me.

I held out the manila envelope.

“Found it in the basement vault, Luca.”

“Victor Vance and Vanessa... they didn't just hire me by accident eleven months ago.”

“They planted me here.”

Luca took the envelope from my hands.

His dark eyes scanned the documents inside line by line.

As he read through the forged medical debt records and the surveillance logs from five years ago, the temperature in the room seemed to drop.

The quiet, terrifying stillness that preceded a storm settled over his broad shoulders.

“They targeted your mother,” Luca said softly.

His voice vibrating with a lethal, controlled rage.

“They manufactured her medical crisis to trap your family in perpetual debt.”

“Knowing you’d eventually apply for work at this estate.”

“They were going to frame me for their embezzlement,” I whispered, tears of frustration stinging my eyes.

“When the federal audit hit, I was the designated fall guy.”

Luca didn't raise his voice.

He slowly closed the envelope and set it down on the mahogany desk.

Then he reached out, taking both of my trembling hands in his large, warm palms.

“Listen to me, Hannah,” he said, his obsidian eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unyielding intensity.

“They thought they were playing chess with pawns.”

“They didn't realize who they were dealing with.”

“Every single person connected to this plot—even the ones already in custody—are going to face additional federal indictments for conspiracy and targeted extortion.”

“You are safe, Hannah.”

“And your mother is safe.”

“Nobody will ever touch you again.”

His thumb gently brushed across my knuckles.

The warmth of his skin sent a sudden, electric shiver through my entire body.

For a long moment, the world outside the study ceased to exist.

There were no syndicates, no federal investigations, and no hidden enemies.
